Capital markets are entering a new phase in the global sustainability transition. While climate-aligned and sustainability-linked assets continue to grow, from carbon markets to nature-based investments and climate resilience instruments, most remain in private markets: illiquid and inaccessible for most investors. Yet the deepest pools of liquid capital in the global financial system sit in public equities markets.
At the same time, the digital technology underpinning this transition is growing exponentially. Tokenization – the digital representation of physical and financial assets, commonly referred to as real-world assets, such as infrastructure projects, commodities, and private credit – opens a vast opportunity to invest in and trade these assets through a more modern market infrastructure.
This transition has precedent, including real estate scaled into public markets through REITs and energy infrastructure scaled through MLPs. In both cases, a new asset class moved from private, illiquid structures into regulated listed instruments — unlocking institutional mandates, enabling retail participation, and generating the price discovery and liquidity that private markets alone cannot provide. Sustainability assets are overdue for the same transition.
At GIX, we are developing a new, SEC-regulated public equities exchange infrastructure to create that bridge. Built on the same trusted, tested rails that support today’s markets, GIX’s digital gateway will bring together traditional investors and digital asset holders in a single marketplace. This will allow tokenized assets to be bought and sold like any listed stock, and – for the first time – gives token asset holders access to the liquidity and price discovery of public markets.
GIX’s product roadmap includes exchange-traded products linked to carbon credits and other environmental commodities, climate and resilience-related instruments, and tokenized real-world assets. This will allow institutional and retail investors to access these asset classes with the price discovery, risk controls, and investor protections that only a regulated exchange provides.
Financing the sustainability transition at scale requires access to the public markets. While the future of public markets is tokenization, that doesn’t come with an easy “instant-on” switch to flip. GIX is leading that transition by developing the infrastructure to connect global capital markets with the investments needed to support a more sustainable and resilient global economy.
