Key Impact Points:

  • $50 Million Bond: BBVA and IFC launch the world’s first biodiversity bond.
  • Targeted Projects: Financing for reforestation, climate-smart agriculture, and habitat restoration.
  • Global Biodiversity Focus: Emphasis on Colombia’s rich biodiversity and environmental conservation.

$50 Million Bond for Biodiversity

BBVA, in partnership with IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, has announced the world’s first biodiversity bond, amounting to $50 million. This significant investment will finance projects focusing on reforestation, regeneration of natural forests on degraded land, mangrove conservation, climate-smart agriculture, and wildlife habitat restoration.

Targeted Environmental Projects

The resources from this bond will support various critical environmental initiatives. These include:

  • Reforestation: Planting trees to restore degraded lands.
  • Mangrove Conservation: Protecting and restoring vital coastal ecosystems.
  • Climate-Smart Agriculture: Implementing sustainable farming practices to enhance soil health and productivity.
  • Wildlife Habitat Restoration: Ensuring safe habitats for diverse species.

Colombia: A Biodiverse Country

Colombia, the world’s most biodiverse country per square kilometer, is home to 14% of known plant species and one-third of all bird species globally. In 2023, BBVA in Colombia channeled 3 billion pesos towards environmental conservation, reflecting nearly a 40% increase from 2022. This bond will further bolster Colombia’s efforts in preserving its rich biodiversity.

Commitment to Sustainability

BBVA and IFC’s collaboration is rooted in a shared commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. “Colombia is the world’s most biodiverse country per square kilometer and this is a huge responsibility for those of us who live there. Our mission is to preserve this biodiversity. For this reason, it brings BBVA great pride to lead this initiative we are presenting today, together with IFC,” said Mario Pardo, BBVA Colombia’s country manager.

Strategic Vision

Alfonso García Mora, Vice President of IFC for Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “Support for conservation projects helps to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and safeguard biodiversity. This future bond issue has the potential to increase access to the financing available for initiatives that conserve, restore and protect biodiversity in Colombia.”

Continued Efforts in Sustainability

In 2023, BBVA financed over 214.8 billion pesos for biodiversity and conservation projects, including:

  • Smart Agriculture: Supporting sustainable farming to preserve ecosystems.
  • Marine Conservation: Financing respectful fishing projects and wetland recovery.
  • Eco-Tourism: Promoting sustainable tourism practices.

BBVA’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond financial investments. The bank’s efforts in environmental conservation, inclusive growth, and emission offsets underscore its dedication to building a greener future. The BBVA Microfinance Foundation also plays a crucial role in supporting microenterprises, particularly women-led businesses in rural areas.

This strategic partnership between BBVA and IFC sets a new benchmark for environmental finance, paving the way for future initiatives aimed at preserving the planet’s biodiversity and promoting sustainable development.
