Wildfires are becoming increasingly frequent and destructive due to rising global temperatures. To address this growing threat, Google Research has partnered with leading fire authorities to launch FireSat, a new global satellite constellation designed to detect wildfires as small as a classroom within 20 minutes. This breakthrough will help firefighters respond more quickly, minimizing destruction.

Developed with the Earth Fire Alliance and backed by $13 million in funding from Google.org and the Moore Foundation, FireSat aims to provide high-resolution, near real-time imagery, allowing authorities to spot fires early—before they grow uncontrollably.

AI-Powered Detection with Custom Sensors

FireSat’s innovative detection system relies on custom infrared sensors, created in partnership with Muon Space and the Environmental Defense Fund. These sensors, combined with AI technology, can compare real-time images of any 5×5 meter area with past data, factoring in local conditions like infrastructure and weather to identify potential fires. Validated through tests using controlled burns, FireSat’s AI system sets a new standard for precision in wildfire detection.

The first satellite in the FireSat constellation is scheduled for launch in early 2025, with the full constellation expected to follow in subsequent years. Once deployed, FireSat will provide real-time data on the location, size, and intensity of wildfires, helping emergency responders act quickly and effectively. This data will also contribute to creating a global historical record of fire spread, assisting scientists and agencies like the U.S. Forest Service in better understanding wildfire behavior.

Transforming Fire Management and Research

FireSat is the latest addition to Google’s efforts in tackling climate change and improving community resilience. Since 2020, Google Research has used AI models to provide wildfire alerts and boundary tracking across 20 countries. FireSat will build on this work by not only improving real-time detection but also enhancing wildfire research through datasets like FireBench, Google’s open-source platform for machine learning-based wildfire detection.
