Tina Mareko: Rising Star in Climate Education and Advocacy

Tina Mareko, a dedicated climate change educator and ocean researcher, is making significant strides in climate change adaptation and disaster risk management. She is currently developing educational materials and courses to bolster local capacity in Samoa, including creating a Certificate Level 3 in Climate Change Disaster Risk Management (CCDRM). This initiative aims to equip local communities with the knowledge and tools needed to manage climate-related risks effectively.

“Education is key to empowering communities to adapt and thrive in the face of climate challenges,” Tina shared.

Representing Samoa on the Global Stage

Tina’s commitment to climate advocacy extends beyond education. She represented Samoa at the Our Ocean Conference in Greece, engaging directly with global leaders to promote ocean conservation and climate action. Additionally, she enhanced her knowledge by participating in the South-South Cooperation Climate Change and Capacity Building Workshop in China, gaining valuable insights into international climate strategies and cooperative efforts.

IOM Youth Delegate at COP29

As COP29 unfolds in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024, Tina Mareko joins a select group of 24 youth leaders as part of the IOM Youth Delegates on Climate Migration. This group is tasked with contributing to discussions and negotiations on climate change and migration, bringing forward innovative solutions and youth-led perspectives.

“Youth-led initiatives are crucial for developing practical solutions that incorporate migration as a response to climate change,” an IOM representative noted.

Advocating for Meaningful Change

At COP29, Tina and her fellow delegates will engage with government officials, experts in migration and climate change, civil society organizations, and stakeholders. These interactions are set to amplify their advocacy and enhance youth contributions to addressing climate displacement.
