UN Unveils Action Plan to Put CMOs at the Center of Sustainable Business Transformation

At the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the UN Global Compact launched its first-ever CMO Blueprint for Sustainable Growth, a guide designed to empower Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) to lead business transformation through sustainability.

“The need for action has never been greater — and neither has the opportunity,” said Sanda Ojiambo, CEO and Executive Director of the UN Global Compact. “The CMO Blueprint for Sustainable Growth is both a call to action and a practical roadmap.”

A Framework Built by Marketing Leaders, for Marketing Leaders

Created by the UN Global Compact’s CMO Think Lab — a group of global marketing executives — the Blueprint defines three ambitions:

  1. Create a unified framework for sustainable marketing.
  2. Provide industry benchmarks to assess and improve sustainability integration.
  3. Foster a collaborative ecosystem of brands and partners committed to systemic change.

The Blueprint is structured around five strategic pillars:

  • Growth Strategy
  • Brand Strategy
  • Innovation
  • Communications, Advertising and Media
  • Collaboration and Partnerships

These pillars are supported by an interactive online hub where stakeholders can share best practices, case studies, and tools to drive transformation at scale.

Cannes Lions Becomes the Launchpad

The launch takes center stage at the Cannes Lions Festival (16–20 June), with the Blueprint showcased at the EverGrow greenhouse in the LIONS Sustainability Hub — a new collaboration with ACT Responsible.

A high-profile launch event will be held on 19 June at 15:30 CET on the Lions Terrace Stage, featuring:

  • Raja Rajamannar, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, Mastercard
  • Cristina Diezhandino, Global CMO, Diageo
  • Khensani Nobanda, CMO, Nedbank

“This blueprint provides a key opportunity for our industry to harness its boundless creativity and pioneer solutions that will echo far beyond Cannes Lions,” said Simon Cook, CEO of LIONS.
