A new peer-reviewed study published in npj Ocean Sustainability<\/em> concludes that restoring the world’s seagrass ecosystems could generate between USD $1.13 trillion and $2.27 trillion in carbon market value under optimal restoration scenarios, positioning one of the planet’s most overlooked marine ecosystems as a potentially transformative asset in the global response to climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study also points to growing opportunities under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which enables countries to cooperate through internationally transferred carbon credits. The implications may be especially significant for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), many of which possess extensive seagrass ecosystems but relatively limited access to traditional climate finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authors note that island nations collectively steward roughly 30 percent of the world’s oceans while representing less than one percent of the global population. As custodians of vast marine ecosystems, these countries are uniquely positioned to transform natural assets into long-term economic value through carefully managed conservation and restoration programs. Revenue generated through carbon markets could help finance climate adaptation, strengthen coastal protection, support fisheries, create local employment, and reinforce national resilience while preserving biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recent discovery of what is believed to be the world’s largest seagrass ecosystem in the Bahamas further illustrates how much natural capital remains unrecognized and potentially undervalued across coastal regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Significant Challenges Remain<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The researchers caution that realizing this opportunity will require much more than planting seagrass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Successful restoration depends first on addressing the pressures that caused seagrass decline, including nutrient pollution, destructive fishing practices, coastal development, declining water quality, and habitat destruction. Many historical seagrass meadows have been permanently lost to land reclamation and infrastructure expansion, meaning full recovery may not be possible everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paper also acknowledges that carbon finance alone is unlikely to cover all restoration costs under current market conditions. Long-term stewardship, scientific monitoring, verification, governance, and continued technological innovation will all be necessary to reduce investment risk and improve restoration success rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
