COP29<\/a>, the United Nations next climate conference in 2024, is scheduled for November 11-24 in Baku, Azerbaijan<\/a>, which is located at the boundary of Eastern Europe and West Asia. Azerbaijan chose Ecology Minister Mukhtar Babayev<\/a> to lead the COP29 event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The previous COP28 event<\/a>, held in United Arab Emirates (UAE) in November-December 2023, attracted roughly 90,000 attendees \u2014 including heads of state, government officials, international industry leaders, private sector representatives, academics, experts, youth, and non-state actors, the UAE said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IT services, software, hardware and cloud companies increasingly attend the annual COP conference to build and strengthen various sustainability and green IT partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COP29 News: April 2024 Updates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tony Blair\u2019s Offer: <\/strong>The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), which was founded by the former U.K. prime minister in 2016, has approached the Azeri government<\/a> with an offer of support for the COP29 climate talks in November 2024, Politico reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Preparations:<\/strong> Conversations and preparations for the COP29 conference shifted into overdrive this week. The latest preparations and chatter involved dedicated meetings with representatives from Asian Development Bank<\/a>, India<\/a>, Israel<\/a>, the Muslim Council of Elders<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China<\/strong>: Azerbaijan is eager to engage in talks with China regarding COP29 issues<\/a>, said Hikmet Hajiyev, Head of the Foreign Policy Department of the Presidential Administration, in an interview with Global Times, Azernews reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Nations: <\/strong>The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has named Nazim Mammadov as its coordinator for COP29. Mammadov is UNDP\u2019s national coordinator for environmental projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COP29 News: March 2024 Updates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

NATO\u2019s Perspectives:<\/strong> NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg<\/a> appeared with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev<\/a> on March 17. Stoltenberg praised the COP29 host nation<\/a> for its role in delivering natural gas to NATO allies, and also credited Azerbaijani for investing in alternative energies, Barron\u2019s reported. Still, some critics continue to question why the event will be hosted in a country that leans heavily on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Climate Finance Meeting: <\/strong>The United Arab Emirates will bring together country representatives and leaders from global financial institutions at a special meeting in June 2024<\/a> in a bid to scale up finance commitments at the COP29 climate talks, Bloomberg report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February 14 \u2013 Alliance:<\/strong> COP28 has launched the COP Presidencies Troika<\/a>, which \u201cunites COP28 with the next two COP Presidencies \u2013 Azerbaijan and Brazil \u2013 to drive ambitious collective climate action,\u201d the COP28 leadership announced. The three will work on the \u2018Roadmap to Mission 1.5\u00b0C\u2019, according to the trio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February 5 \u2013 United Nations Official: <\/strong>Top UN climate official Simon Stiell appears to be seeking to play a prominent role on the road to COP29<\/a> and COP30, Axios reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February 2 \u2013 United States Climate Ambassador:<\/strong> U.S. President Joe Biden has selected veteran Democratic official John Podesta as the US\u2019s new top climate ambassador<\/a>, Climate Home News reported. Podesta will oversee the US\u2019s diplomacy up to and at COP29, the report noted. He succeeds John Kerry<\/a>, who stepped down to work on Biden\u2019s reelection campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February 1 \u2013 Financial Services: <\/strong>Delegates from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD<\/a>) have met with Azerbaijan\u2019s minister of environment<\/a> to prep for COP29, though details of the discussions were not disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

COP29 News: January 2024 Updates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

January 29 \u2013 Multiple Countries Weigh In: <\/strong>Azerbaijan representatives have met with leaders from Denmark<\/a> and Germany<\/a> to exchange views on event preparations. Details of the discussions were not disclosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 29 \u2013 Key Leaders:<\/strong> Nigar Arpadarai<\/a> has been appointed as UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29 Azerbaijan, COP29 said on its official X account<\/a>. January 19 \u2013 Azerbaijan\u2019s Climate Goals: <\/strong>Azerbaijan\u2019s says it is on track to achieve its goal of 30% renewable power by 2030, according to its latest climate plan submitted to the UN, Bloomberg reported. Azerbaijan\u2019s decarbonization plan<\/a> also include cutting emissions 40% by mid-century, from 1990 levels \u2014 a target that\u2019s below what scientists recommend should be done globally to avoid catastrophic global warming, Bloomberg noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 19 \u2013 Women Added to COP29 Climate Committee:<\/strong> Azerbaijan added 12 women to its COP29 organising committee<\/a> after criticism of the body, which had previously been entirely all male, Reuters reported. Related<\/strong>: This appears to be the list of COP29 organizing committee advisors<\/a>, though we have not independently confirmed that this list is accurate, nor do we know which of the advisors are men or women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 15 \u2013 No Women on COP29 Climate Committee: <\/strong>Azerbaijan appointed no women to 28-member COP29 climate committee<\/a>, triggering worldwide concern<\/a>, according to The Guardian. In stark contrast, 63% of COP28\u2019s organizing committee members were women, The Guardian noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 12 \u2013 Getting Organized: <\/strong>Ilham Aliyev<\/a>, president of the Republic of Azerbaijan, has signed a decree to establish COP29\u2019s organizational committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
