Major firms like WPP, Omnicom, and Publicis have been called out for conflicts of interest in reports by InfluenceMap and Clean Creatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-revenue-ties-to-fossil-fuels\"><strong>Revenue Ties to Fossil Fuels<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to InfluenceMap\u2019s analysis, these agencies work with companies that oppose clean energy regulations. WPP, for instance, represents the American Petroleum Institute (API), which has resisted emissions reduction policies, even while working for green-minded clients like PayPal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt is critically important that agencies understand how exposure to obstructive clients calls into question the authenticity of their own climate commitments,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Faye Holder of InfluenceMap<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clean Creatives\u2019 2024 \u201cF-List\u201d report highlighted nearly 700 new fossil fuel-related contracts, with WPP leading the pack at 79 contracts, followed by Omnicom (74) and Interpublic Group (50). Despite these ties, over 1,250 agencies have pledged not to work with fossil fuel clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-brands-rethink-agency-relationships\"><strong>Brands Rethink Agency Relationships<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Progressive brands are beginning to question their partners\u2019 commitments. Patagonia has a strict policy of working only with firms aligned with its environmental ethos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThose relationships, built on trust and transparency, wouldn\u2019t be successful if our partners were also doing work that undermines our purpose of being in business to save the planet,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Patagonia spokesperson Gin Ando<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seventh Generation has also evaluated its marketing partners, asking detailed questions about fossil fuel ties and Paris Agreement commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cGetting the agency to change, that is where the greatest impact lies,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Kate Ogden, Seventh Genera<\/strong>tion\u2019s head of advocacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-brands-can-take-action\"><strong>How Brands Can Take Action<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Brands committed to sustainability can take several steps to ensure alignment with their advertising partners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ask Direct Questions<\/strong>: Understand if agencies represent fossil fuel clients and their policies on climate commitments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Review Agency Practices<\/strong>: Examine agencies\u2019 emissions reduction strategies and their client portfolios for potential conflicts of interest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use RFPs Strategically<\/strong>: Incorporate sustainability priorities into the agency selection process and contract renewals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jason Parkin, founder of Clean Creatives signatory Compose[d] Creative, emphasized: <em>\u201cThis is something that every brand should be doing, especially those concerned about the climate crisis.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By fostering honest conversations with agency partners, brands can ensure that their sustainability goals are not undermined.
