This innovative tool allows businesses, financial institutions, landowners, and even citizens to fund and benefit from certified nature-positive actions\u2014such as restoring wetlands or expanding forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe have to put nature on the balance sheet. That\u2019s exactly what nature credits do,\u201d <\/em><strong>said Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission<\/strong><em>. \u201cWhen well-designed, they will provide an efficient, market-driven instrument that encourage the private sector to invest and innovate.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transforming Nature Into a Strategic Asset<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With over 75% of eurozone businesses depending on nature, nature credits offer a new financial mechanism to <strong>reward those who protect ecosystems<\/strong>, create <strong>new revenue streams for farmers, fishers, foresters, and local communities<\/strong>, and help <strong>businesses reduce operational risks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWith this roadmap, we are taking a bold step to recognise nature as a strategic asset for Europe\u2019s future,\u201d <\/em><strong>said Jessika Roswall, Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy<\/strong><em>. \u201cNature credits have the potential to attract essential private investment, while also rewarding those who are the custodians of our land and seas.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-addressing-the-nature-investment-gap\">Addressing the Nature Investment Gap<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commission emphasized that with <strong>\u20ac65 billion needed annually for biodiversity<\/strong>, nature credits will act as a <strong>voluntary, complementary instrument<\/strong> to public funding. The roadmap will develop <strong>clear standards, independent certification<\/strong>, and leverage existing frameworks to maintain credibility and prevent greenwashing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative also supports broader EU goals like the <strong>EU Competitiveness Compass<\/strong>, <strong>Clean Industrial Deal<\/strong>, and <strong>Nature Restoration Regulation<\/strong>, aiming to strengthen resilience against climate risks that could slash business profits by 7% annually within the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Bottom-Up, Inclusive Approach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stakeholder participation is central.
