The $90B food giant achieved the reduction through supply chain initiatives like training farmers, cutting methane, and avoiding deforestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis is not a permanent emissions removal,\u201d <\/em>said <strong>Sybrig Smit<\/strong>, policy analyst at the NewClimate Institute, cautioning against relying on land-based removals that can be reversed if land is mismanaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sector-leader-but-still-under-pressure\">Sector Leader, But Still Under Pressure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nestl\u00e9 stands out among food and beverage peers, with its net-zero target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) back in 2020. Just 44% of its peers have net zero targets, and fewer still target methane emissions\u2014something Nestl\u00e9 does, alongside Campbell Soup and Danone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ceres\u2019 Carolyn Ching praised the company\u2019s methane reduction strategy: \u201cWe think Nestl\u00e9 is demonstrating that they\u2019re putting plans and steps in place in order to make progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Sustainability Officer Antonia Wanner, who recently joined Nestl\u00e9\u2019s C-suite, oversees this progress. By 2030, that number is projected to increase to 13 million tCO2e\u2014a nearly eightfold jump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SBTi permits these removals, but many experts challenge their permanence and transparency. Nestl\u00e9 said it gathers on-farm data, uses satellite monitoring, and places 20% of credits in a buffer pool to reduce reversal risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the company\u2019s \u201cPortfolio transformation\u201d strategy\u2014expected to deliver 6 million tCO2e in cuts by 2030\u2014is vague. When asked, Nestl\u00e9 pointed to examples like its Nescaf\u00e9 Alta Rica brand, where emissions per jar dropped 11\u201314% since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-investor-messaging-sustainability-on-mute\">Investor Messaging: Sustainability on Mute?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite presenting a robust climate roadmap publicly, Nestl\u00e9\u2019s investor-facing messaging has shifted.
