It gauges impacts using Net Primary Production\u2014the energy sustaining ecosystems\u2014alongside human appropriation of that energy and endangered species data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-case-studies-bring-finance-into-the-forest\">Case Studies Bring Finance Into the Forest<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To ground the methodology, Nippon Life mapped out case studies that link business operations directly to ecosystem outcomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Palm Oil Farmers:<\/strong> Helping smallholders in Indonesia raise yields could avoid deforestation, cutting human appropriation of ecosystem energy (HANPP).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alternative Proteins:<\/strong> Startups producing beef substitutes could reduce pastureland expansion in Latin America, easing deforestation pressures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cobalt Recycling:<\/strong> Recovering metals from used electronics avoids new mining and the associated forest loss in the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Urban Housing:<\/strong> High-rise residential development in Africa was modeled as a way to meet population growth needs without expanding into forests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reforestation Funds:<\/strong> A Brazil-based fund planting native trees both increases Net Primary Production and supports endangered species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The approach also enforces <strong>Do No Significant Harm principles<\/strong>, checking that projects don\u2019t create new environmental or social risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-investor-push-into-biodiversity\">Investor Push Into Biodiversity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cAs a long-term institutional investor, we believe it is important that the global environment be maintained within a safe and stable operating space,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Yasutoshi Miyamoto<\/strong>, general manager of Nippon Life\u2019s Responsible Investment Strategy Office. <em>\u201cUsing this approach as a starting point, through dialogue and research with various stakeholders in industry, government, and academia, we intend to refine the approach to make it more robust and expand its application to investment and financing practices.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>ERM\u2019s <strong>Kosuke Kanematsu<\/strong> added: <em>\u201cWe developed the framework for this Nature Finance Approach in alignment with the latest scientific guidance around nature. Its move is one of the first attempts by a global insurer to <strong>quantify biodiversity impacts with the same discipline used for climate finance<\/strong>.
