When Dan Thomas joined the United Nations in 2000, the Millennium Development Goals were just beginning to reshape the way the world thought about poverty and development. He found himself in the center of the effort to craft a shared global narrative, one that could mobilize governments and citizens alike. That moment set the course for his career.

Fifteen years later, Thomas was spokesperson to Mogens Lykketoft, the Danish Prime Minister who gaveled into existence the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals at the UN General Assembly. It was a front-row seat to history, but also a reminder of how critical clear, compelling communication would be if the world was going to meet those ambitious targets.

Over the years, Thomas has worn many hats across the UN system. He has brought the speed and urgency of a former journalist to UNICEF, the President of the General Assembly, and now the UN Global Compact. In every role, his approach has been the same: translate complex global frameworks into stories that matter to leaders, businesses, and ordinary people.

Today, as Chief Communications Officer of the UN Global Compact, Thomas is responsible for helping the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative tell its story. His work has turned abstract commitments into practical narratives that invite business leaders to see the SDGs not just as obligations but as opportunities. His communications strategy has been central to expanding the Compact’s reach, demonstrating that sustainability is not an afterthought but a driver of growth and resilience.

Dan Thomas is also a host and convener. Whether on stage interviewing executives or orchestrating global events, he embodies the conviction that effective communication is a force multiplier. When the message is right, he believes, momentum follows.

That philosophy has come to life in the Global Compact’s flagship convenings. Unstoppable Africa has become a powerful platform for highlighting the continent’s private sector leadership, while the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit now stands as one of the most influential gatherings for sustainability in business worldwide. Both events bear Thomas’s imprint: ambitious in scope, sharp in messaging, and designed to inspire action at scale.

In a system often criticized for bureaucracy, Dan Thomas has shown that words, when chosen well, can cut through the noise and mobilize the world’s most powerful actors toward the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals.
