Key Impact Points:
- Eion to remove 78,707 tons of CO2 by 2030 via enhanced rock weathering.
- Partnership with Growmark provides scale, leveraging a network of nearly 400,000 farmers.
- Economic and soil health benefits targeted for rural communities.
Landmark Carbon Removal Agreement
Eion, a leading innovator in enhanced rock weathering (ERW), has secured a substantial $33 million carbon removal purchase from Frontier buyers. Under the agreement, Eion will remove 78,707 tons of CO2 between 2027 and 2030 by spreading olivine, a rapidly weathering mineral, across farmland in the Midwest and South.
Strategic Agricultural Partnership
Eion’s strategic partnership with Growmark, one of North America’s largest agricultural cooperatives, significantly amplifies the scale and reach of ERW technology. Growmark’s extensive network, encompassing nearly 400,000 farmers, opens new geographic opportunities for ERW expansion.
“Frontier’s offtake provides an opportunity to meaningfully scale enhanced rock weathering in the US,” said Anastasia Pavlovic, CEO of Eion. “Via our partnership with Growmark, we’re excited to deliver tangible value to the farmers who are critical to achieving significant carbon removal while maintaining operational excellence on the farm. This work will provide impact through economic stimulus and soil health benefits to rural communities, which is core to Eion’s mission.”
Sustainability and Farmer Benefits
Farmers benefit directly from Eion’s use of olivine, an affordable alternative to agricultural lime. Approved for agricultural use for decades, olivine efficiently absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide while providing essential trace elements that facilitate precise measurement of carbon sequestration.
“Growmark believes it is important to invest in innovative products like this that help make agriculture more sustainable while also connecting farmers with carbon buyers,” said Brad Drake, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
Rigorous Environmental Safeguards
Eion maintains rigorous scientific monitoring, utilizing established soil sampling and lab practices. Trace elements such as nickel and chromium, naturally present in agricultural soils, are continuously benchmarked against stringent safety guardrails derived from EPA-verified data, ensuring responsible environmental stewardship.
Frontier’s initiative involves prominent companies including Stripe, Google, Shopify, McKinsey Sustainability, Autodesk, H&M Group, Salesforce, and others committed to climate action through strategic carbon removal investments.
