New regional study finds philanthropy is outpacing meaningful action on children’s rights across Asia<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new UNICEF study has found that while companies across emerging Asia are increasingly embracing environmental, social and governance (ESG) reporting and public human rights commitments, most still fail to measure, disclose or manage the ways their operations affect children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report, Making Children Count: Sustainability Reporting across Emerging Asia<\/em>, examined the sustainability reports of 1,399 publicly listed companies across nine Asian markets. It concludes that children\u2014who account for roughly one-third of the population across much of the region\u2014remain largely invisible in corporate sustainability reporting despite being directly affected by business practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strong commitments, weak implementation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The study found that nearly three-quarters of companies publicly commit to respecting human rights, while 88 percent report supporting children through community or philanthropic initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, those commitments rarely translate into core business practices. Only one in 20 companies identifies children as a stakeholder group, and just one in 100 assesses how its operations, products or services affect children’s rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The findings reveal significant blind spots across several of the issues shaping children’s futures. Only 2 percent of companies reference children within their climate strategies, while fewer than 10 percent of technology firms disclose measures to protect children online. Just 3 percent commit to responsible marketing practices designed to safeguard children, and although 72 percent have policies addressing child labor, only 2 percent explain how they remediate violations and only 3 percent describe efforts to help suppliers strengthen labor practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ESG’s missing stakeholder<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

UNICEF argues that many businesses continue to treat children primarily as beneficiaries of charitable giving rather than as stakeholders whose rights can be affected throughout corporate value chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Across Asia, corporate sustainability reporting is accelerating faster than anywhere else,” said UNICEF Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific Sanjay Wijesekera. “Yet child rights remain one of the most significant unreported dimensions of corporate sustainability.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organization says closing this gap is not only a matter of protecting children, but also of strengthening long-term economic resilience. Better integration of children’s rights into governance, risk management and supply chains can help build healthier, more skilled workforces while improving investor confidence and corporate accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vietnam reflects broader regional challenge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The report’s findings in Viet Nam illustrate the broader regional trend. Reviewing 109 listed companies, UNICEF found an average score of just 57 out of 260 on child-rights integration\u2014well below the regional average of 77.7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although 83 percent of companies reported supporting child-focused community initiatives, only 37 percent explicitly committed to addressing child labor risks, and none reported commitments to promoting living wages throughout their supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From ESG to measurable impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The findings arrive as investors, regulators and consumers increasingly expect companies to demonstrate measurable social impact alongside environmental performance. UNICEF argues that children’s rights should become a core component of corporate governance rather than remaining confined to philanthropic initiatives or community outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organization is calling on companies, governments, investors and stock exchanges to integrate children’s rights into ESG standards, sustainability reporting and investment decisions. It says the next phase of corporate sustainability in Asia must move beyond promises toward measurable action\u2014making children’s wellbeing a visible indicator of business performance rather than an overlooked dimension of sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
