WHO says the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record has spread across five provinces, with conflict, displacement and the absence of approved vaccines or treatments complicating containment efforts<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Ebola outbreak continues to expand across the country’s eastern provinces, although the World Health Organization (WHO) reports early signs of stabilization in Mongbwalu, where the outbreak was first detected, and in Goma, North Kivu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the outbreak was declared on 15 May, the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus has spread to five provinces, making it the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak ever recorded. Unlike the more common Zaire strain, the Bundibugyo virus currently has no approved vaccine or targeted treatment. WHO says its response is centered on rapid case detection, contact tracing, isolation, safe and dignified burials and community engagement to contain the outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ituri Remains the Epicenter<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

According to WHO, Ituri province accounts for more than 90 percent of reported infections and approximately 80 percent of all deaths. Cases have also been confirmed in North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele and Tshopo provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking from Bunia, the capital of Ituri, WHO Incident Manager Dr. Thierno Bald\u00e9 said the outbreak continues to spread into new areas of eastern DRC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The outbreak remains ahead of us and we are still in the phase of catching up,”<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conflict Complicates the Response<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The outbreak is unfolding across eastern DRC, where armed group violence and chronic instability continue to affect communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHO says insecurity, population displacement and limited health infrastructure are complicating disease surveillance, patient care and outbreak response. In response, the organization and its partners are expanding safe and dignified burial teams, strengthening referral systems and increasing clinical care capacity in areas experiencing the highest levels of transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health workers are also continuing extensive case investigations, contact tracing and community engagement efforts aimed at identifying infections early and encouraging affected communities to seek treatment and cooperate with follow-up monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rapid Response Shows Encouraging Results<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

WHO reported encouraging early results in Kisangani, Tshopo province, where rapid response teams were deployed after five imported cases from Ituri were identified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Dr. Bald\u00e9, no secondary infections have been detected, and WHO plans to expand the same rapid-response model to other emerging areas, including Katwa and Butembo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency is also strengthening surveillance and control measures along the Congo River, which it describes as a critical transportation corridor requiring rapid implementation of disease control measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early Signs of Stabilization<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

WHO says Mongbwalu\u2014the community where the outbreak was first identified\u2014is now showing signs of stabilization, with similar trends emerging in Goma, North Kivu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While emphasizing that the outbreak remains ahead of response efforts overall, WHO said these developments are encouraging indicators in two of the affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Containment Efforts Continue<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Bundibugyo Ebola virus has previously caused only two documented outbreaks\u2014in Uganda in 2007 and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2012. Those outbreaks recorded fatality rates of approximately 30 percent, while the current outbreak is producing an estimated case fatality rate of around 40 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early symptoms\u2014including fever, fatigue and other flu-like illness\u2014can resemble more common diseases, making early diagnosis challenging. As the disease progresses, patients may develop severe hemorrhagic complications and multi-organ failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHO maintains that early detection, comprehensive contact tracing, safe and dignified burials, community engagement and rapid deployment of response teams remain the primary tools available to contain the outbreak while no approved vaccine or treatment exists for the Bundibugyo strain. Although officials report encouraging signs of stabilization in several locations, they stress that transmission continues to outpace response efforts in many affected areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
