{"id":4011,"date":"2024-09-23T16:48:06","date_gmt":"2024-09-23T16:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdgnews.com\/?p=4011"},"modified":"2024-09-23T16:48:09","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T16:48:09","slug":"guest-post-sec-disbands-climate-esg-task-force-tim-mohin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sdgnews.com\/es\/guest-post-sec-disbands-climate-esg-task-force-tim-mohin\/","title":{"rendered":"Guest Post: SEC Disbands Climate &amp; ESG Task Force &#8211; Tim Mohin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Guest Post By<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tim-mohin-22a3182\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tim Mohin<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember59\">The SEC\u2019s beleaguered ESG agenda took another hit this week <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/esg\/sec-quietly-dissolves-climate-and-esg-enforcement-task-force\">as their Enforcement Division\u2019s Climate &amp; ESG Task Force, set up three years ago, was quietly disbanded<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember60\">The group was created in March 2021 to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowell.com\/en\/insights\/client-alerts\/sec-enforcement-warms-up-commission-creates-climate-and-esg-task-force\">develop initiatives to proactively identify ESG-related misconduct<\/a>.\u201d Since then, the group has played a pivotal role in some of the SEC\u2019s biggest ESG-related fines, like their biggest ones against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/sec-fines-deutsche-bank-fund-unit-for-money-laundering-and-esg-misstatements-18f5c865#:~:text=Deutsche%20Bank%27s%20investment%20arm,ESG%20claims%20by%20money%20managers.\">Deutsche Bank<\/a> ($25 million) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0e2b6e41-4113-437f-824b-80d7acd29579\">Goldman Sachs<\/a> ($4 million) and for misleading ESG fund claims. The SEC now claims that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/esg\/sec-quietly-dissolves-climate-and-esg-enforcement-task-force#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20strategy%20has%20been%20effective%2C%20and%20the%20expertise%20developed%20by%20the%20task%20force%20now%20resides%20across%20the%20Division%2C%E2%80%9D%20the%20SEC%20spokesperson%20said%20in%20a%20statement.\"><em>the expertise developed by the task force now resides across the Division<\/em><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember61\">This move is another signal of SEC\u2019s gradual retreat from its ESG agenda as scrutiny and lawsuits grow from the conservative-led ESG backlash. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgdive.com\/news\/sec-drops-esg-fy-2024-exam-priorities-compliance-gary-gensler\/697206\/#:~:text=The%20agency%27s%20office%20responsible%20for,a%20priority%20for%20next%20year.\">ESG was removed from the SEC\u2019s list of 2024 policy priorities<\/a> after featuring as a priority every year from 2020 &#8211; 2023. They said in their 2019 and 2020 annual reports that their coffee pods could be recycled, but recycling companies said they would not accept them. <strong>John Dugan<\/strong> of the SEC said, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/sec-fines-keurig-1-5-million-over-coffee-pod-recyclability-claims\/#:~:text=John%20Dugan%2C%20Associate,educated%20investment%20decisions.%E2%80%9D\"><em>Public companies must ensure that the reports they file with the SEC are complete and accurate.
