A new report titled <em>&#8220;Coral Triangle at Risk: Fossil Fuel Threats and Impacts&#8221;<\/em> highlights how oil and gas exploration overlap with fragile ecosystems, posing severe environmental and economic consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe coral reefs there are the most incredibly biodiverse in the world,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Gabby Ahmadia<\/strong>, vice president of area-based conservation for WWF-US. \u201cA scuba diver could dive a thousand times and still see new things each time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Princess Empress Oil Spill<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2023 sinking of the <em>Princess Empress<\/em> off the Philippines released <strong>200,000 gallons of industrial oil<\/strong>, devastating coral reefs, mangrove forests, and seagrass beds. More than <strong>20,000 families<\/strong> lost their livelihoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOil can injure marine mammals, asphyxiate mangrove trees, and halt coral growth or reproduction,\u201d<\/em> the report notes, citing data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Overlapping MPAs and Fossil Fuel Expansion<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While 600 MPAs are designated across the Coral Triangle, only a fraction are fully protected, leaving ecosystems vulnerable.
