That means cutting Scope 3 emissions, which made up <strong>97.3% of Microsoft\u2019s total emissions<\/strong>, according to the company\u2019s latest data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThe consequences of doing nothing, or doing too little too late, are unforgiving,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Melanie Nakagawa, Microsoft\u2019s Chief Sustainability Officer<\/strong>, addressing the summit delegates.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2020 to 2023, Microsoft\u2019s Scope 3 emissions rose <strong>26%<\/strong>, largely due to the expansion of datacenter infrastructure to support cloud and AI growth. Currently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Purchased goods and services<\/strong> make up 34% of Scope 3 emissions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Capital goods<\/strong> contribute 40.8%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, these supplier-driven categories account for nearly three-quarters of Microsoft\u2019s upstream carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-targeting-emissions-hotspots\"><strong>Targeting Emissions Hotspots<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft is taking a focused approach, identifying high-emission \u201chotspots\u201d in its supply chain where interventions will have the most impact:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Semiconductor manufacturing<\/strong>: high energy and potent gas use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Electronic components<\/strong>: carbon-heavy fabrication processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Assembly and integration<\/strong>: emissions from materials and energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Raw materials<\/strong>: carbon-intensive mining and forming processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mandating-carbon-free-electricity-use\"><strong>Mandating Carbon-Free Electricity Use<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To decarbonize supplier operations, Microsoft updated its <strong>Supplier Code of Conduct in 2024<\/strong> to require suppliers, upon request, to use <strong>100% carbon-free electricity (CFE)<\/strong> for Microsoft-related goods and services by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThis approach will drive new CFE generation into the grid and push down fossil in the power mix,\u201d<\/em> said <strong><em>Will Hudson<\/em> at the summit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure real impact, the clean energy must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Produced in the same region where it\u2019s consumed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflective of <strong>new additional generation<\/strong>, not repurposed from existing supply<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ai-helps-accelerate-decarbonization\"><strong>AI Helps Accelerate Decarbonization<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft is also investing in <strong>AI-based solutions<\/strong> to optimize grids, accelerate permitting, and reduce emissions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Portfolio company <strong>LineVision<\/strong> uses AI to unlock 50% more capacity in existing power lines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internally, Microsoft uses AI to calculate 70% of product carbon footprints with <strong>supplier-provided primary data<\/strong>\u2014well above the industry\u2019s 20% average.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThere are tens of thousands of lines of calculations to calculate the carbon footprint of one device,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Leo Aspauza, Director of Cloud Supply Chain Sustainability at Microsoft.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-shared-response-to-rising-electricity-demand\"><strong>A Shared Response to Rising Electricity Demand<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With electricity demand surging\u2014driven by data centers, EVs, and electrification\u2014Microsoft is prioritizing <strong>scalable low-carbon power<\/strong> such as wind, solar, nuclear, and grid optimization to keep pace while cutting emissions. Emerging technologies like hydrogen and ammonia are also under exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-collaboration-is-the-way-forward\"><strong>Collaboration is the Way Forward<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In her LinkedIn post after the summit, <strong>Melanie Nakagawa<\/strong>, emphasized:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cNearly 75% of Microsoft\u2019s Scope 3 emissions come from purchased goods and services and capital goods. This is an important reminder that our suppliers play a pivotal role in helping us reach our goal of carbon negative by 2030.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re making progress, but we know there\u2019s still more work to be done.
