There are early signs that the sustainability recession is ending, and the practice is emerging more focused, agile, and pragmatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember66\">The majority of surveys and corporate research released this year have busted the myth that sustainability is \u2018woke\u2019 and an expense to shareholders. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/adam-elman_sustainability-leadership-climateaction-activity-7353340350259732480-q2RL?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAABnDEIBzMc82lKOVwJcbuQBMCHBIVoslLg&amp;_bhlid=72dd30d14bf3ec14b60b9d112d76f5ae2493463e\"><strong><em>In a great post<\/em><\/strong><\/a> from <strong>Adam Elman<\/strong> this week, he shared some studies showing that sustainability budgets are being maintained or increasing, and that business leaders are seeing positive ROI on sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember67\">I have highlighted some of his evidence here, as well as some of my own favorites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>JP Morgan&#8217;s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/88-of-companies-see-sustainability-as-a-value-creation-opportunity-morgan-stanley-survey\/?utm_source=www.esgandclimatenews.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=what-sustainability-recession&amp;_bhlid=6b41419a5bcdc9a2b1b967feef3e854139457d18\"><strong><em>Sustainable Signals: Corporates 2025<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u201d found that <strong>88% of sustainability creates value for their companies\u2019 long-term strategy, up 3% from last year.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/global\/en\/about\/press-room\/executives-say-sustainability-investments-are-up-new-deloitte-research-reveals.html?utm_source=www.esgandclimatenews.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=what-sustainability-recession&amp;_bhlid=5bb6446bfaa652cda4ac6bfc54780d3529789b1f\"><strong><em>Deloitte research<\/em><\/strong><\/a> found that <strong>85% of companies have increased their sustainability investments this year.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/impact.economist.com\/sustainability\/net-zero-and-energy\/3-in-4-corporate-sustainability-leaders-say-sustainability-budgets-unshaken?utm_source=www.esgandclimatenews.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=what-sustainability-recession&amp;_bhlid=fde539cfc8bbb388930b2f24e49f783dd9d2854c\"><strong><em>An Economist survey<\/em><\/strong><\/a> of Chief Sustainability Officers found that <strong>77% have had their budgets remain the same or increase this year.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/trellis.net\/article\/publication-sustainability-reports-dropped-half-2025\/?utm_source=www.esgandclimatenews.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=what-sustainability-recession&amp;_bhlid=c1d5c663f9530ea2b64acff676d2da70c6b7be5b\"><strong><em>While businesses have been slower to release their reports this year<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/85-of-companies-to-move-ahead-with-climate-reporting-even-if-regulations-change-workiva-survey\/?utm_source=www.esgandclimatenews.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=what-sustainability-recession&amp;_bhlid=4f8a499be5d40e75bb13ef1fc21baccdde760f15\"><strong><em>Workiva survey<\/em><\/strong><\/a> found that <strong>85% of companies plan to continue reporting, 97% of executives say sustainability reporting will be a business advantage within two years, and 96% of investors agree it strengthens financial performance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember69\">This is just a snapshot of the recent research showing that sustainability and business value are synonymous. But, in this moment, demonstrating the value of our work has never been more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember70\">In the public sphere, support for government action on climate change has never been stronger. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/jul\/09\/thousands-meet-their-mps-to-show-huge-demand-for-climate-action?utm_source=www.esgandclimatenews.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=what-sustainability-recession&amp;_bhlid=e2318da2ada5177c0a043abe791f4666dc216899\"><strong><em>In the UK, a recent survey found that 89% of the public support climate action<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. In the U.S., the Trump Administration plans to scrap programs like Energy Star (which helps consumers select energy efficient appliances) are meeting with resistance from the public and industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-23\/building-owners-are-trying-to-save-energy-star-from-trump-cuts?utm_source=www.esgandclimatenews.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=what-sustainability-recession&amp;_bhlid=effc379184c7c05761e73a5cf93d88aeac1f754e\"><strong><em>Commercial building owners<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, in particular, are trying to save the program as it helps them save billions of dollars a year in energy efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"ember71\">There\u2019s no denying that sustainability is going through a crisis, and the recession may not have bottomed out yet. <a href=\"https:\/\/trellis.net\/article\/7-in-10-experts-say-backlash-against-sustainability-agenda-is-intensifying\/?utm_source=www.esgandclimatenews.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=what-sustainability-recession&amp;_bhlid=274390516a4853619b1328c72b4b1a6eacdc57d6\"><strong><em>Recent research from Trellis found that 70% of experts think the sustainability backlash is intensifying<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. However, the data shows that investment in corporate sustainability programs is continuing, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/sustainable-finance-reporting\/why-business-wont-abandon-sustainability-long-term-play-2025-05-19\/?utm_source=www.esgandclimatenews.com&amp;utm_medium=newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=what-sustainability-recession&amp;_bhlid=86440a88b3ec9ba9e38dce604e19a326109d5927\"><strong><em>businesses won&#8217;t abandon it in the long run<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.
