Key Impact Points:

  • 10 learning centers in conflict-affected regions will receive satellite-powered high-speed internet under a three-year partnership.
  • Thousands of youth in South Sudan and Uganda will gain access to digital education and online resources for the first time.
  • WPDI trainees will gain digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and peacebuilding skills, helping close the digital divide in underserved areas.

Satellite Connectivity Expands Access to Education in East Africa

Intelsat and the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI), founded by actor and humanitarian Forest Whitaker, have launched a landmark partnership to bring high-speed satellite internet to underserved communities in South Sudan and Uganda.

The agreement will equip 10 WPDI Community Learning Centers—seven in South Sudan and three in Uganda—with satellite connectivity, installation, and technical support over a three-year period.

Digital Tools for Peace and Progress

“Education is the foundation for peace,” said Forest Whitaker. “At WPDI, we use technology as a conduit to opportunity—bringing knowledge to young people whose lives have been upended by violence and political unrest. With the right tools, youths can reclaim their futures to become powerful agents of peace in their communities.”

The satellite-enabled learning centers will allow students to access digital curricula, online courses, and virtual exchange programs, enhancing WPDI’s existing focus on conflict resolution, entrepreneurship, and community development.

Bridging the Digital Divide in Fragile Settings

The initiative comes amid stark digital inequalities. Just 19% of people in least developed countries have internet access, with rates even lower in conflict-affected regions like South Sudan and Uganda, according to the International Telecommunication Union.

Graduates of WPDI programs have already begun transforming their communities—like Benson Lugwar, a former child soldier who is now a local official and radio host in Uganda.

“Forest Whitaker and WPDI’s efforts represent exactly the kind of transformative work that satellite communications can enable,” said Dave Wajsgras, CEO of Intelsat. “We’re proud to support WPDI’s efforts to bring young people together, close the digital divide, and create pathways to prosperity in communities that need it most.”
