Key Impact Points:

  • Global Goal: COP28 aims to triple renewable power capacity by 2030, but current plans fall short.
  • Opportunity: Countries can update Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to reflect higher ambitions and existing policies.
  • Significant Increase Needed: Current commitments cover only 12% of the target; potential updates could reach 70%.
  • IEA Support: IEA offers analysis and recommendations to help countries overcome barriers and accelerate renewable energy deployment.

Ambitious Renewable Targets Highlighted

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has identified a major opportunity for countries to set stronger plans to achieve the COP28 goal of tripling global renewable power capacity by 2030. Current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) fall significantly short, covering just 12% of the required target.

Potential for Progress

However, the IEA’s new analysis reveals that countries’ domestic ambitions could collectively achieve 70% of the goal if fully integrated into updated NDCs. This presents a significant chance for nations to enhance their commitments and align their plans with global objectives.

Overcoming Challenges

Key challenges remain, including financing costs, project permit delays, and grid infrastructure investment. The IEA proposes targeted actions to address these barriers, such as improving policy visibility and supporting pre-development phases of renewable projects.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol stated:

“At COP28, nearly 200 countries pledged to triple the world’s renewable power capacity this decade, which is one of the critical actions to keep alive hopes of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. This report makes clear that the tripling target is ambitious but achievable – though only if governments quickly turn promises into plans of action. By delivering on the goals agreed at COP28 – including tripling renewables and doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030 – countries worldwide have a major opportunity to accelerate progress towards a more secure, affordable and sustainable energy system. The IEA will continue to support governments around the world in efforts to achieve this.”

Accelerating Renewable Deployment

The report underscores the need for immediate and robust action to meet the ambitious renewable targets. Countries are encouraged to enhance their renewable energy plans and implementation strategies to drive significant progress toward the 2030 goals.
