Key Impact Points:

  • Largest soil carbon deal to date: Microsoft will receive 2.6 million carbon removal credits from Agoro Carbon over 12 years.
  • Supports regenerative agriculture: Credits stem from U.S.-based farming practices like cover cropping, improved grazing, and reduced tillage.
  • Quality and science-backed verification: Projects follow Verra’s VM0042 methodology and undergo rigorous third-party validation.

Microsoft Commits to Long-Term Soil Carbon Removals in Landmark Agoro Carbon Deal

Agoro Carbon has secured a 12-year offtake agreement to deliver 2.6 million soil-based carbon removal credits to Microsoft — one of the most substantial agriculture-driven carbon removal deals to date.

“This agreement with Microsoft is the strongest endorsement of our quality-driven, farmer-focused approach to soil carbon sequestration,” said Elliot Formal, CEO of Agoro Carbon.

Advancing Sustainable Agriculture with Scale and Integrity

The credits will be generated from Agoro Carbon’s U.S. crop and rangeland projects under Verra’s VM0042 Improved Agricultural Land Management methodology, which deploys regenerative practices such as:

  • Cover cropping
  • Reduced tillage
  • Improved grazing

These approaches not only sequester carbon in soil but also enhance resilience, biodiversity, food security, and water retention. Participating farmers and ranchers benefit through increased yields, input efficiency, and a new income stream from verified carbon credits.

Rigorous Validation and Corporate Climate Alignment

Agoro Carbon’s program combines field-level soil sampling, advanced modeling, and third-party verification, meeting Microsoft’s high-quality criteria for durable carbon removals.

“Agoro Carbon’s approach to soil-based carbon removals reflects the kind of scientific rigor and long-term solution we look for in our carbon removal portfolio,” said Brian Marrs, Senior Director of Energy Markets at Microsoft.

A Flagship Moment for Soil Carbon Markets

This multi-year agreement marks a strategic milestone in the evolution of agriculture-based climate solutions and signals growing corporate demand for durable, science-backed, and scalable carbon removal methods.

Agoro Carbon’s commitment: building long-term partnerships that support both climate goals and producer resilience—while helping corporations like Microsoft meet net-zero targets with integrity.
