  • A Deloitte survey shows 86% of Gen Z and 89% of Millennials prioritize meaningful work, often leaving jobs if sustainability commitments are broken.

Celebrating Sustainability Leadership

Edward Freer, Sustainability Communications Lead at LSEG, earned a spot in the 2024 Trellis Group 30 Under 30 list (formerly GreenBiz 30 Under 30). This accolade celebrates young changemakers tackling climate challenges within the world’s largest organizations.

Edward Freer expressed his gratitude on social media:
“Delighted to have been named in the Trellis Group 30 under 30 list alongside a great group of people! Thanks to Caroline Stebbings, Rachel Moseley, Jane Goodland and the rest of the LSEG Sustainability & Communications teams for their support.”

Edward Freer began his career as a steward while a college student, guiding crowds at Liverpool FC’s Anfield stadium. Its “Red Way” sustainability campaign inspired his career. Now, he’s leading climate communications at the $48 billion London Stock Exchange Group. The 25-year-old led the firm’s communications on its double materiality assessment (reporting on how the company affects the environment and how the environment affects the company), London Climate Action Week and educated employees on sustainability progress.

The Impact of the Trellis Group 30 Under 30

The ninth class of honorees, born on or after March 29, 1994, represents five countries, including the U.S., U.K., Mexico, Brazil, and the Philippines. These individuals were selected from nearly 300 nominations for their impactful efforts to address climate challenges at scale.

Their work spans corporate giants like BlackRock, Estée Lauder, and Whole Foods, startups such as HelloFresh and Circ, and NGOs like EDF and GRID Alternatives. These leaders are making sustainability a priority through initiatives such as:

  • Assessing climate risk for $2.5 trillion in assets under management at Barclays.
  • Doubling JetBlue’s sustainable fuel usage.
  • Engineering low-carbon buildings at Gensler.
  • Setting up the U.S. Department of Energy’s $3.5 billion carbon-removal hubs.

A Generational Shift Toward Purpose-Driven Careers

A Deloitte survey underscores the growing demand for purpose-driven work among Gen Z and Millennials. With 86% of Gen Z and 89% of Millennials emphasizing the importance of a meaningful mission, younger workers are increasingly holding employers accountable for sustainability commitments—even “climate quitting” when promises are broken.

These rising stars are creating solutions for the future, driving progress in fields such as renewable energy, circular fashion, and sustainable urban development. Their work is not only impactful but also essential as the world tackles the climate crisis.

Let’s celebrate Edward Freer and his peers for their inspiring contributions to a sustainable future.
