On September 23, 2024, in New York, USA, the World Economic Forum announced the release of its new report titled “Spotlight on Nature: Case Studies for Business Transformation towards a Nature-Positive Future.” This report, developed in collaboration with McKinsey & Company, underscores the urgent need for businesses to adopt nature-positive strategies as over half of the global GDP is intimately connected to natural resources.

Transforming Business Models for Sustainability

The “Spotlight on Nature” report highlights seven pioneering strategies implemented by multinational corporations to tackle environmental challenges and leverage opportunities for sustainable growth. These strategies are vital for scaling up the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water and sanitation (SDG6), life below water (SDG14), and life on land (SDG15).

Key Strategies and Corporate Leaders

  1. IKEA is enhancing its commitment to sustainable forestry, aiming for a forest-positive approach by preventing deforestation and promoting responsible management practices.
  2. Walmart focuses on maintaining transparent and sustainable seafood supply chains to ensure long-term availability and affordability.
  3. Ørsted is actively reducing the environmental impact of its offshore wind projects on marine ecosystems through targeted, site-specific conservation efforts.
  4. Suntory prioritizes water efficiency and watershed replenishment to secure sustainable freshwater resources vital for their global beverage production.
  5. AB InBev invests in local water resilience solutions in high-risk watersheds to maintain the availability of clean water necessary for their brewing processes and agricultural inputs.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Despite the progress demonstrated by these industry leaders, significant challenges remain in scaling these practices globally. Financial, regulatory, and logistical barriers, particularly in regions with underdeveloped policy frameworks, continue to hinder broader adoption of nature-positive strategies. However, the pioneering efforts of these companies provide valuable lessons and inspiration for others in the business community.

Gim Huay Neo, Managing Director at the World Economic Forum, emphasized the role of businesses in securing a sustainable future: “Our latest report highlights concrete examples of how companies are taking action to protect, restore, and sustainably manage natural resources, while driving profit and growth. This proactive approach is essential for addressing the interconnected challenges of nature loss, climate change, and promoting sustainable development.”

Daniel Pacthod, Global Co-Leader at McKinsey & Company, also remarked on the transformative impact of these practices: “The business community’s efforts to adopt nature-positive practices are not only about compliance but about embedding new and innovative models that enable business resilience.”

Looking Forward

As the 2030 deadline for achieving the SDGs approaches, the World Economic Forum continues to advocate for increased collaboration and innovation among all sectors. The “Spotlight on Nature” report serves as a call to action for both the private and public sectors to deepen their commitment to sustainable practices that support global biodiversity and climate goals, ensuring a nature-positive future for all.
