According to Marcus Lima, co-founder and CEO of Heimdal, the company has achieved a cost of capture below $200 per ton. Nevertheless, Heimdal and its partners see this as a viable path forward while working on long-term solutions for permanent carbon storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-cost-and-emissions-dilemma\"><strong>The Cost and Emissions Dilemma<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike some of its competitors, Heimdal powers its carbon capture process with natural gas\u2014a move driven by cost efficiency. Lima admitted that natural gas is \u201cthe cheapest form of heat out there,\u201d but acknowledged that the company will need operating data to assess how much CO2 is emitted during the process. Currently, most kilns emit about 550 pounds (250 kilograms) of CO2 for every ton of carbon removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the reliance on natural gas, Lima hinted at the potential to switch to electric kilns in the future, but for now, cost considerations make natural gas the more feasible option for Heimdal\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-path-to-permanent-sequestration\"><strong>The Path to Permanent Sequestration<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The US has become a hotbed for early-stage DAC companies, fueled by tax credits in the Inflation Reduction Act and funding from the US Energy Department.
