UNDP data shows 56% of people globally think about climate volatility weekly, while a 2023 Pew study found that 72% of Americans care \u201ca great deal\u201d or \u201csome\u201d about climate change. Yet, <strong>corporate sustainability efforts still lack scale, urgency, and mass investor access.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-cosmetic-change-isn-t-enough\">Why Cosmetic Change Isn\u2019t Enough<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kontoleon criticizes the incrementalism and marketing spin around long-term net-zero pledges. \u201cNet-Zero by 2050 can feel like \u2018kicking the can down the road,\u2019\u201d he notes, warning that <strong>fear-based messaging and vague commitments erode public trust<\/strong>\u2014especially among retail investors and younger generations who increasingly view capitalism with skepticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, <strong>excitement and transparency<\/strong> must be the new fuel for sustainability. \u201cExcitement fosters a deeper, stronger drive to embrace change,\u201d he writes, referencing research on how positive emotions shape long-term climate behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-capitalism-s-missed-potential-and-opportunity\">Capitalism\u2019s Missed Potential\u2014and Opportunity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than dismissing capitalism, Kontoleon says it should be <strong>retooled to serve long-term environmental goals<\/strong>. He highlights how market incentives\u2014if structured correctly\u2014can accelerate climate innovation and corporate responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhen profit and planet converge, businesses have strong incentives to reduce waste, lower emissions, and adopt sustainability initiatives to increase the bottom line.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He calls for aligning investor, consumer, and executive incentives, allowing sustainability to be <strong>both profitable and pragmatic<\/strong>. Retail investors, he argues, should be given more accessible options\u2014<strong>new sustainability-linked financial instruments that go beyond traditional green bonds or ESG ETFs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-historical-precedents-for-market-driven-solutions\">Historical Precedents for Market-Driven Solutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kontoleon illustrates how <strong>cooperative capitalism<\/strong> can solve systemic problems, citing the creation of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>SWIFT (1973)<\/strong> \u2013 for secure international financial transactions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>DTCC (1973)<\/strong> \u2013 to digitize and stabilize securities clearing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ISDA (1985)<\/strong> \u2013 to manage credit risk through standardized derivatives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These collaborations\u2014once seen as improbable on Wall Street\u2014demonstrate how industry-wide infrastructure can be built when <strong>self-interest aligns with systemic stability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cCollaboration is not a bad word, nor is it inherently socialist.
