The milestone project is Europe\u2019s first at this scale and is supported by NOK 22 billion in state funding, part of a total NOK 34 billion investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cLongship demonstrates that it is possible to cut emissions from the industry and waste in a safe and effective way. This is a technological breakthrough and a milestone in Norway\u2019s climate efforts. We have built a complete value chain for CO\u2082 management that will have significant impact far beyond our borders,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Minister of Energy Terje Aasland<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>End-to-End Solution, Ready for Global Replication<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The project integrates CO\u2082 capture at Heidelberg Materials\u2019 cement plant in Brevik and, by 2029, Hafslund Celsio\u2019s waste-to-energy plant in Oslo. Captured CO\u2082 is transported by ship and injected into subsea reservoirs 2,600 meters beneath \u00d8ygarden in western Norway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first CO\u2082 shipment from Brevik has already been delivered, with injection into storage reservoirs scheduled for <strong>August 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Northern Lights Opens Access to Europe<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Northern Lights, a joint venture between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, operates the offshore transport and storage component. It is the <strong>first open-access Carbon Capture<\/strong> <strong>&amp; Storage (CCS) infrastructure<\/strong> of its kind. Agreements are already in place with <strong>Yara (Netherlands), \u00d8rsted (Denmark), and Stockholm Exergi (Sweden)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU has designated the project a \u201cProject of Common Interest,\u201d unlocking \u20ac131 million through the <strong>Connecting Europe Facility (CEF)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Phase 2 Will More Than Triple Capacity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Longship Phase 1 will store <strong>1.5 million tonnes<\/strong> of CO\u2082 annually. With the Norwegian Ministry of Energy\u2019s approval of Phase 2, this will grow to <strong>over 5 million tonnes per year<\/strong>, making the project a cornerstone of the EU\u2019s decarbonization strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>National Investment in Climate and Industry<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThis is an investment in future jobs, technology, and industry.
