Its new report, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/m\/item\/progress-on-household-drinking-water--sanitation-and-hygiene-2000-2024--special-focus-on-inequalities\">Progress on Household Drinking-Water, Sanitation and Hygiene 2000\u20132024: Special Focus on Inequalities<\/a><\/em>, shows that while 2.2 billion people have gained access to safe drinking water and 2.8 billion to sanitation over the past two decades, the world is still far from universal coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, <strong>2.1 billion people<\/strong> remain without safely managed drinking water, including <strong>106 million<\/strong> relying on untreated surface water. But the JMP warns the world is <strong>off track<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Global coverage of safe drinking water has risen from 68% in 2015 to 74% in 2024. To hit the 2030 target, progress must accelerate <strong>eightfold<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sanitation coverage improved from 48% to 58% over the same period, but reaching universal access would require progress to triple.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hygiene services reached 80% of the population, but the pace must double to meet the goal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disparities remain stark. People in least developed countries are more than twice as likely as others to go without safe water or sanitation, and over three times as likely to lack hygiene. In fragile contexts, access levels drop even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Women and Girls Bear the Burden<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The inequalities fall heaviest on women and girls. Many bear the daily burden of water collection, and new JMP data show menstrual health challenges across income groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThese inequalities are especially stark for girls who often bear the burden of water collection and face additional barriers during menstruation,\u201d<\/em> said <strong>Cecilia Scharp<\/strong>, UNICEF\u2019s head of water, sanitation and hygiene services.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Urgency, and a Path Forward<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At current trends, the UN warns the world will miss its 2030 water and sanitation goals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe must accelerate action, especially for the most marginalised communities, if we are to keep our promise to reach the Sustainable Development Goals,\u201d<\/em> said Krech.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cAt the current pace, the promise of safe water and sanitation for every child is slipping further from reach \u2013 reminding us that we must act faster and more boldly to reach those who need it most,\u201d<\/em> Scharp added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, the report underscores that progress is possible. Entire regions such as <strong>Australia and New Zealand<\/strong> have already achieved universal access to safe drinking water and sanitation, while Latin America and the Caribbean are on track for basic water services by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge, WHO and UNICEF stress, is not about possibility but about speed.
