Key Impact Points:
- LEGO increased sustainable material purchases to 50% in 2024, up from 18% in 2023.
- Significant investments were made to phase out natural gas, enhance geothermal and solar energy.
- Over 12 million children benefited from LEGO’s learning-through-play initiatives globally.
Accelerating Sustainable Materials
The LEGO Group significantly advanced its commitment to sustainability in 2024, ensuring half of the materials purchased for LEGO bricks were sustainably sourced. This marks a notable increase from 18% in 2023, with 47% certified mass balance materials, translating to around 33% renewable sources, and an additional 3% from segregated sustainable sources.
CEO Niels B Christiansen emphasized, “2024 was an exceptional year for the LEGO Group and we are very pleased with our strong performance. We achieved record top- and bottom-line results even as we accelerated spending on strategic priorities, including a significant increase in the purchases of sustainable raw materials.”
Reducing Carbon Footprint
To further its environmental goals, LEGO actively reduced carbon emissions at its factories. Key actions included phasing out natural gas heating in Denmark, installing geothermal energy in Hungary, and expanding solar energy capacity in China, Czech Republic, and Denmark by 43%. These investments are expected to significantly reduce emissions and support the company’s science-based targets in coming years.
Positive Impact on Future Generations
In addition to environmental sustainability, the LEGO Group expanded its social impact, benefiting over 12 million children worldwide through product donations and educational initiatives based on play.
Niels B Christiansen said, “Play is more important than ever, and we were happy to see the UN General Assembly adopt an International Day of Play to champion children’s right to play. Our outstanding performance in 2024 helped reach millions of children around the world with joyful learning-through-play experiences that help them develop the skills they will need to thrive.”
