Key Impact Points:

  • Fact-checkers removed: Meta will no longer use third-party fact-checkers for content moderation on Facebook and Instagram.
  • User-driven moderation: A new “community notes” function will rely on users to correct misinformation, including climate denialism.
  • Criticism from experts: Scientists and advocacy groups warn the move could amplify climate disinformation and undermine shared facts.

Meta Shifts to User-Moderation

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a controversial move to eliminate fact-checkers from its platforms, stating that “fact-checkers have just been too politically biased, and have destroyed more trust than they’ve created, especially in the U.S.” Instead, the company will depend on a “community notes” system, akin to the approach used by Elon Musk’s X platform.

The decision follows years of efforts by Meta to combat climate disinformation, including blocking deceptive ads and launching a Climate Science Center to provide accurate information. Critics argue the reversal could hinder public understanding of climate science and policy.

A Favorable Turn Toward Trump

The announcement comes as Meta signals alignment with President-elect Donald Trump. Zuckerberg promised to “push back on governments around the world that are going after American companies and pushing to censor more.” Trump praised the move as “impressive” and noted Meta’s change in direction after his prior threats to jail Zuckerberg for alleged censorship.

Zuckerberg also announced plans to relocate Meta’s content moderation team from California to Texas, citing concerns over perceived bias. However, he did not clarify how the relocation would address these issues.

Expert and Advocacy Concerns

Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University, warned the decision undermines trust in facts. “The trend is towards living in a world where there basically are no facts. This is just sort of another step down the road,” he said.

Michael Khoo, of Friends of the Earth, criticized Meta’s profit-driven motives, stating, “Meta and other companies benefit from the sharing of bad information and use algorithms designed to boost content, no matter how false, in order to make profit at the expense of the truth.”

Implications for Climate Misinformation

Advocacy groups fear the decision could worsen the spread of climate denialism. Meta’s platforms, with their 3 billion users worldwide, have already served as hubs for climate disinformation. The removal of fact-checkers could deepen the challenge of addressing climate change, as public discourse becomes increasingly polarized.

Zuckerberg’s announcement, coinciding with the anniversary of Trump’s suspension from Facebook, underscores a strategic pivot towards “prioritizing speech” over moderation.
