SDG NEWS RISING STAR: In this week’s feature, we spotlight a visionary who is transforming public health through technology. Rainier Mallol, a 25-year-old trailblazer from the Dominican Republic, has not only co-founded AIME — Artificial Intelligence in Medical Epidemiology — but also steered it into a global force capable of predicting disease outbreaks with unprecedented accuracy.

Background and Inspiration

The Genesis of AIME
Growing up in the Dominican Republic, where Dengue fever poses a significant health threat, Rainier was intimately aware of the disease’s impact. He shared, “Growing up in the Dominican Republic, the number one health concern we think about is Dengue. My mother and my brother have both had it.” This personal experience fueled his determination to tackle infectious diseases head-on, leading to the creation of AIME.

Technological Breakthroughs

Innovating Public Health
AIME’s platform combines epidemiology, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence to predict the timing and location of infectious disease outbreaks in real-time. Currently operating with an 87% accuracy rate, the tool has already been deployed in pilot projects across Malaysia, Brazil, and the Philippines. Rainier Mallol emphasizes, “We’re an epidemiology company first, and a technology company second.” His approach showcases the fusion of technology and traditional epidemiology to enhance health security worldwide.

Achievements and Recognition

A Leader Among Leaders
Rainier’s innovative approach and commitment to global health improvements have not gone unnoticed. His work led to his selection as a Young Leader for the Sustainable Development Goals. This prestigious recognition comes from an initiative where “The Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals are 17 global citizens who have been recognized for their outstanding leadership in their efforts to achieve the Goals. The 17 were selected from more than 18,000 nominations and will work with the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth on efforts to engage young people in the realization of the Goals.”

Academic Achievements

Educational Foundation
Rainier’s academic journey has been equally impressive, highlighted by his Master of Arts/Science degree from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. This prestigious educational background has equipped him with the skills necessary to navigate and influence the complex landscape of global health policy and innovation.

Honors and Accolades

Forbes Recognition
Adding to his list of accolades, Rainier was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 in Healthcare in 2020, marking him as one of the leading young innovators in the field. This recognition serves as a testament to his impact and the potential for his initiatives to effect substantial change in global healthcare.

Future Aspirations and Impact

Vision for Tomorrow
Looking ahead, Rainier and his team are exploring how AIME’s models could be adapted to tackle other major health threats like HIV, Tuberculosis, Malaria, and other neglected tropical diseases. He explains, “We’re trying to shift epidemiology to be more proactive, and with new technology that’s increasingly possible.” This vision underlines his commitment to leveraging technology for broad, impactful public health initiatives.

Rainier Mallol stands out not only as a technological innovator but also as a beacon of hope for future generations. His work with AIME has set a new standard in epidemiology, proving that with technology and determination, proactive health management is not just possible but achievable. As Rainier continues to engage with global forums and influence public health strategies, his journey is a testament to the power of youthful innovation in solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
