The world’s largest sportfishing yacht, Special One, is set to make waves at the Monaco Yacht Show this week. Built by Royal Huisman and designed by Vripack, this 171-foot “sportfisher on steroids” not only represents the pinnacle of marine design but also a significant step toward sustainability.

Running on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil

Special One will operate on hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a renewable biofuel made from waste products like used cooking oils and fats. This innovative fuel can be used in conventional engines but produces 90% fewer carbon emissions than traditional diesel.

“We applied our most radical naval architecture ever on this hull, resulting in dramatically lower resistance and, consequently, reduced fuel consumption,” says Vripack’s co-creative director Bart Bouwhuis. “However, we were also very aware that no matter what, the twin V-20 MAN 4,500 kW drive train—which propels this yacht to over 32 knots—and her twin Zenoro 180 kW generators will always burn a substantial amount of fuel. We knew of this ‘new fuel’ and started our research.”

Innovative Design and Features

Boasting a highly efficient aluminum hull that helps curb pollution, Special One is designed for an experienced yachtsman and passionate angler. The six-deck yacht features:

  • A soaring tuna tower that doubles as a prime fishing spot and a viewing platform.
  • A fighting chair, a dedicated bait-and-tackle room, insulated cooler boxes, and 22 fishing rods.
  • Luxurious amenities including a scenic sky lounge, an outdoor cinema, and an open foredeck with oversized sun pads.

Luxurious Interiors to Be Unveiled

The interior, also designed by Vripack, evokes a penthouse with contemporary décor and sweeping views. While the living quarters remain under wraps, they are set to be revealed during the Monaco Yacht Show.

Setting a New Standard in Yachting

Special One exemplifies how luxury and sustainability can coexist, setting a new benchmark in the yachting industry. By integrating advanced design with renewable energy sources, the yacht showcases a commitment to environmental responsibility without compromising on performance or luxury.

Special One won’t be the only big splash at the Monaco Yacht Show; other notable superyachts are also launching at the prestigious event.
