At just 22, Jerome Foster II has already become a leading figure in the fight for climate and environmental justice. His journey began at 16 when he started striking in front of the White House, rallying fellow students and youth around the world to demand action on climate change. Collaborating with renowned activists like Greta Thunberg and Jane Fonda, Foster helped transform small protests into a global movement.

Historic Role in Government

In March 2021, Foster made history as the youngest-ever advisor to the White House, joining President Joe Biden’s Environmental Justice Advisory Council. His work on the council led to the creation of the American Climate Corps, a federal program focused on employing young people in clean-energy and climate-resilience sectors. Foster’s unique perspective as a young Black activist continues to shape national climate policy.

“We said our generation will take up the mantle. If politicians and our institutions aren’t going to do enough, we’ll get out in the streets,” Foster said, reflecting on his early activism.

A Vision for Inclusive Change

Foster’s advocacy goes beyond environmental concerns. He stresses the importance of recognizing the interconnectedness of social justice issues, from racial equality to reproductive rights. His work envisions a future where clean air and water are universally accessible and young Black girls and boys have equal opportunities to thrive.

“If you’re fighting for racial justice, you’re fighting for reproductive freedom, if you’re fighting for women’s rights, all those things are intersectional to climate change,” Foster explains.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Foster remains a dedicated mentor to young activists, reminding them to stay patient in their quest for change. He acknowledges that while progress can feel slow, it is vital to continue pushing forward.

“Even if we don’t see immediate results, something tomorrow will appear,” Foster encourages. “We’ll see a future where it’s like, ‘We did that.’”

Jerome Foster II’s commitment to environmental and social justice has earned him recognition as a rising star in the fight for a sustainable and equitable future. His work exemplifies the power of youth leadership in driving meaningful change.
