Leading with Purpose on Nature and Biodiversity

Sarah Nelson, Global Lead Director for Nature and Biodiversity at KPMG International, is at the forefront of advancing how the financial sector understands and manages nature-related risks. Based within KPMG’s Global ESG Advisory Hub, Sarah is helping shape the firm’s global natural capital strategy—particularly at a time when nature and biodiversity are rising sharply on the sustainability agenda.

With over two decades of international leadership, Sarah has held senior roles across five UK Government Departments, the United Nations Environment Programme, and multiple environmental NGOs. She also served as a Seconded National Expert to the Irish Presidency of the European Union.

A Voice of Expertise in Global Biodiversity Risk Response

Sarah Nelson’s work was instrumental in the launch of NATURE-INSURE, a joint initiative by UNDP, TNFD, and KPMG to equip insurance supervisors with the tools needed to manage biodiversity-related financial risks.

“As biodiversity loss accelerates, insurance supervisors face more complex risks and new opportunities,” said Sarah. “By furthering their understanding of nature-related risks, NATURE-INSURE aims to support more resilient insurance systems and nature-positive investment strategies.”

Her leadership reflects KPMG’s commitment to aligning financial systems with the Global Biodiversity Framework and the SDGs—through practical implementation, capacity-building, and disclosure readiness.

Education and Expertise

Sarah Nelson holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Natural Resources Management, specializing in Ecological Conservation, and a BSc (Hons) in Zoology. Her scientific background underpins her ability to translate ecological complexity into strategic advisory for clients and public institutions.

At a moment when the integration of nature into financial systems is urgent, Sarah Nelson is a critical voice guiding global action—and delivering clarity and expertise where it’s needed most.
