Jakarta\u2019s push into data centers signals how emerging economies are positioning themselves for the next phase of the global AI race.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As governments around the world scramble to secure their place in the artificial intelligence economy, Indonesia is rapidly emerging as one of the most consequential players in Southeast Asia\u2019s digital infrastructure boom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Indonesia Investment Authority (INA), the country\u2019s sovereign wealth fund, is significantly increasing its exposure to data centers and AI-related infrastructure, joining a growing wave of state-backed investment vehicles that view digital infrastructure as a strategic national asset rather than simply a commercial opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bloomberg reports that INA and its partners have deployed about 74.5 trillion rupiah (US$4.2 billion). Nearly 30 percent of this went toward digital infrastructure. The fund manages over US$8 billion in assets. It has already invested in DayOne Data Centres, a spin-off of GDS Holdings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This move reflects a broader geopolitical shift. Governments now recognize that data centers and AI computing are foundational to national competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Infrastructure Race<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For decades, sovereign wealth funds concentrated on ports, airports, highways, energy assets, and real estate. Increasingly, however, digital infrastructure is being viewed as the next generation of strategic infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The global AI boom is driving unprecedented demand for computing power. Moody\u2019s Ratings has estimated that as much as US$3 trillion could flow into data center-related investments over the next five years, creating one of the largest infrastructure investment opportunities of the decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia appears determined to ensure it is not merely a consumer of AI technologies developed elsewhere, but a destination for the infrastructure required to power them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of these AI developments are coming outside of Indonesia,\u201d<\/em> INA Chief Investment Officer Christopher Ganis<\/strong> said, \u201cbut it does not mean that\u2019s a trend that we will just skip.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The country\u2019s demographic profile strengthens that ambition. With one of the youngest populations in Asia and rapidly expanding digital adoption, Indonesia offers a large domestic market for AI services, cloud computing, and digital platforms. Navigating a Multipolar AI Landscape<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia\u2019s strategy is also notable because it arrives amid intensifying competition between the United States and China over artificial intelligence leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than aligning exclusively with either bloc, INA has indicated it intends to maintain a \u201cnon-bloc\u201d approach, partnering across geopolitical lines while pursuing Indonesia\u2019s national development priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That position mirrors a broader trend across the Global South, where governments are increasingly seeking to attract investment and technology from multiple partners while maintaining strategic autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The approach could prove particularly significant as countries compete to become regional AI hubs. Nations capable of offering reliable power supplies, supportive regulatory environments, skilled talent pools, and large domestic markets are likely to capture growing shares of AI-related investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia\u2019s move highlights a larger reality facing policymakers worldwide: the AI economy is no longer solely about algorithms and software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
