In a 17-page memo titled Tough Truths About Climate<\/em>, released Tuesday, Gates argued that while global warming remains a grave threat, the international community\u2019s current approach risks missing the bigger picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf given a choice between eradicating malaria and a tenth of a degree increase in warming, I\u2019ll let the temperature go up 0.1 degree to get rid of malaria,<\/em>\u201d he told reporters. \u201cPeople don\u2019t understand the suffering that exists today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Gates\u2019 intervention reframes one of the most contentious questions in global development: how to balance the immediate needs of human welfare with the long-term imperatives of decarbonization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Emissions to Human Resilience<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist \u2014 whose Gates Foundation has committed tens of billions to global health, education, and poverty eradication \u2014 said the world\u2019s climate strategies have grown \u201ctoo narrowly defined.\u201d Instead of chasing fractional temperature targets, he urged investment in innovation, adaptation, and disease prevention that directly improve lives in a warming world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
