Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics to develop new artificial intelligence systems that can \u201clisten\u201d to the planet. The initiative aims to detect real-time environmental threats \u2014 from illegal logging to wildlife decline \u2014 and transform biodiversity monitoring in some of the world\u2019s most endangered ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/home\/\"><strong>The Cornell Lab<\/strong><\/a> is one of 15 recipients of the Bezos Earth Fund\u2019s AI Grand Challenge for Climate and Nature, which supports AI-driven solutions to environmental crises, including biodiversity loss, deforestation, and food insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-listening-to-a-world-in-crisis\"><strong>Listening to a world in crisis<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional biodiversity monitoring depends on human observation \u2014 a slow, costly process that cannot match the scale or urgency of species loss now unfolding. Bioacoustics, the study of animal sounds, offers a powerful alternative by using microphones and sensors to detect, record, and analyze soundscapes across entire ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe are facing the biggest environmental challenge because of the scale of the changes and the speed at which they\u2019re happening \u2014 it\u2019s effectively a mass extinction that\u2019s happening within decades rather than millennia,\u201d<\/em> said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/home\/staff\/ian-owens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ian Owens<\/strong><\/a><strong>, director of the Cornell Lab<\/strong>. <em>\u201cWe simply don\u2019t know how wildlife populations are doing, particularly in the most biodiverse regions. We need scalable, efficient solutions \u2014 and this project helps unlock exactly that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ai-powered-sensors-for-the-global-south\"><strong>AI-powered sensors for the Global South<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cornell team, working with partners including Mongabay, the Wildlife Conservation Society, Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany, and Brazil\u2019s Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, will deploy next-generation bioacoustic sensors enhanced with AI analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their work will focus on two of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots in the Global South: Guatemala\u2019s Maya Biosphere Reserve and Brazil\u2019s Pantanal wetland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Guatemala, where the Maya Biosphere Reserve faces deforestation, fires, and illegal poaching, the team will deploy real-time acoustic recorders developed with Analog Devices. These AI-enabled devices will analyze sound data in the field and transmit alerts about disturbances such as chainsaws or gunfire \u2014 a capability that <em>\u201cno commercial product out there can do,\u201d<\/em> said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/ccb\/holger-klinck\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Holger Klinck<\/strong>, director of the Yang Center.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Brazil\u2019s Pantanal, the world\u2019s largest tropical wetland, the technology will monitor populations of jaguars, giant anteaters, hyacinth macaws, and other species threatened by ranching and wildfires. \u201cConservation cannot advance without a solid understanding of what is present and what is at stake,\u201d Klinck said. \u201cThese new tools will allow managers to act in support of biodiversity around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-new-model-for-biodiversity-monitoring\"><strong>A new model for biodiversity monitoring<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The project will also create the first AI foundation model for natural sounds, a global dataset and algorithm capable of classifying species and environmental patterns across different habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThis bioacoustic model will enable a much more comprehensive assessment of ecosystems, representing a turning point in biodiversity monitoring,\u201d <\/em>said <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/ccb\/larissa-sayuri-moreira-sugai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Larissa Sayuri Moreira Sugai<\/a><\/strong>, interim assistant director at the Yang Center.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>By integrating sound recognition AI with real-time acoustic data, researchers can generate continuous ecosystem \u201chealth reports\u201d \u2014 the ecological equivalent of satellite imaging for wildlife. Funding from the Bezos Earth Fund will also support open data sharing and capacity-building with local conservation teams, ensuring the technology is applied directly to field management and policy decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-turning-point-for-conservation-intelligence\"><strong>A turning point for conservation intelligence<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Bezos Earth Fund, led by Lauren S\u00e1nchez and Dr. Andrew Steer, the AI Grand Challenge reflects a growing emphasis on data-driven climate and nature solutions.
