In an era where the climate crisis poses one of the most significant challenges to humanity, Marie-Claire Graf stands out as a beacon of hope and innovation. A trailblazing climate activist and negotiator, Graf’s work exemplifies the profound impact that youthful energy and fresh perspectives can bring to global environmental policy. As co-founder of the Youth Negotiators Academy (YNA), she is redefining how young people engage with and influence international climate negotiations.

Journey into Climate Activism

Graf’s journey into climate activism began with her historic role as the youngest negotiator for Switzerland at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in 2019. This experience not only underscored her exceptional capabilities but also set the stage for her impact on the international youth climate movement. Her path to becoming a leading advocate for youth involvement in climate diplomacy was significantly shaped by her role as Global Focal Point for YOUNGO at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Graf’s tenure with YOUNGO provided her with a front-row seat to the challenges young people face in global climate negotiations. But it also demonstrated how countries on the frontlines of the climate crisis were not effectively utilizing the power of youth leaders to achieve more ambitious climate goals during negotiations. This experience revealed a critical gap: the need for a structured platform to empower youth with the skills and knowledge to effectively engage in and influence international environmental policies. Recognizing this need, Graf co-founded the Youth Negotiators Academy, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing these very gaps. The YNA was established with the goal of equipping young leaders with essential negotiation skills, a thorough understanding of multilateral processes, effective diplomatic strategies, and necessary financial assistance to ensure their participation. By providing this support, YNA ensures that young voices are not only heard but are also influential in shaping global climate policy.

The academy’s impact has been both substantial and rapid. In its inaugural year, YNA trained 59 youth negotiators from 26 countries for COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh in 2022. Building on this success, the academy expanded its reach in 2023, training 172 negotiators from 54 countries for COP28 in Dubai. By 2024, YNA has more than 400 youth negotiators from 83 countries trained for COP29. This growing global recognition and speed with which YNA has been embraced by governments underscores the academy’s pivotal role in shaping the future of climate diplomacy.

In addition to her work with YNA, Graf has chaired the United Nations Food Systems Summit’s youth committee, contributing to vital discussions on sustainable food systems. Her involvement with Swiss Youth for Climate and the co-founding of Sustainability Week Switzerland and International further exemplify her dedication to fostering youth engagement at all levels—from local initiatives to global forums. Recognition of Graf’s achievements underscores her impact in climate diplomacy. She has been honored by the United Nations and featured in Forbes’ 30 under 30 list, affirming her significant contributions to environmental advocacy. Her roles as a member of the World Future Council and a Global Shaper at the World Economic Forum further reflect her broad influence and commitment to sustainability.

Marie-Claire Graf’s journey illustrates the transformative power of empowering youth in climate policy. Her role with YOUNGO illuminated the urgent need for structured platforms like YNA, leading to the creation of an initiative that is reshaping global environmental governance. Her work ensures that the voices of young leaders are not just included but are central to driving meaningful change. In her own words, Graf reflects on her mission: “The future belongs to those who are prepared to shape it. We must ensure that young voices are not just part of the conversation but are leading it.” This philosophy drives her work and underscores her commitment to a more inclusive and effective approach to climate diplomacy. Marie-Claire Graf’s impact as a rising star in climate activism is a testament to her visionary leadership and dedication.

Through YNA and her other initiatives, Graf is setting a new standard for how young leaders can influence and shape the future of environmental policy. Her efforts are not only advancing climate justice but also paving the way for a more inclusive and dynamic approach to global climate diplomacy.
