Microsoft Secures Largest-Ever Direct Air Capture Carbon Removal Deal With Oxy’s 1PointFive

Landmark Agreement

1PointFive, a leader in carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS), has announced a significant agreement with Microsoft to sell 500,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits over the next six years. This marks the largest single purchase of CDR credits enabled by Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology to date, underscoring the growing reliance on this method to help organizations meet their net-zero emissions targets.

Implementation and Impact

The CDR credits for Microsoft will be facilitated by STRATOS, 1PointFive’s first industrial-scale DAC facility currently under construction in Texas. Under the terms of the agreement, the captured CO2 will be securely stored through subsurface saline sequestration, ensuring it is not utilized for oil and gas production. This method offers a transparent and durable solution to addressing emissions, particularly from industries that are hard to decarbonize.
