Key Impact Points:
- Largest Forest Carbon Deal in Eastern U.S. in Two Decades: Over 425,000 acres of forestland will be protected across five states.
- High-Integrity Carbon Removal Starts in 2025: 4.8 million nature-based removal credits to be delivered using ACR’s advanced IFM v2.1 protocol.
- Tech-Enabled Monitoring and Oversight: Anew’s Epoch Evaluation Platform ensures precision tracking through satellite, drone, and field data.
Microsoft Deepens Climate Commitment Through Landmark Forest Carbon Deal
Anew Climate and Aurora Sustainable Lands have entered into a 10-year agreement with Microsoft to deliver 4.8 million nature-based carbon removal credits—a major investment in U.S. forest conservation and carbon sequestration.
“This agreement sets a new standard for nature-based carbon removals, pairing technical rigor with environmental stewardship at scale,” said Angela Schwarz, Chief Executive Officer of Anew Climate.
Project Scope and Innovation
Spanning over 425,000 acres of working forests across New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Florida, the projects utilize Improved Forest Management (IFM) techniques under the ACR’s IFM v2.1 protocol, a next-gen methodology designed to raise standards in additionality, accuracy, and transparency.
The credits will be among the first issued under this protocol and will start delivering in 2025—addressing a global shortage of high-quality, verifiable carbon removals.
Anew’s Epoch Platform: Tech Meets Nature
Anew’s Epoch Evaluation Platform plays a central role. Using AI, high-resolution satellite imagery, drone surveillance, and field measurements, the platform ensures site-specific and ongoing validation—well above existing registry requirements.
The agreement also includes perpetual working forest easements, extended monitoring, and covenants to guarantee long-term climate benefits.
“Microsoft’s collaboration enables innovation that benefits the broader market and accelerates our collective path to net zero,” Schwarz added.
Forest Ownership and Management Integrity
Aurora Sustainable Lands brings added credibility as both landowner and operator.
“Aurora Sustainable Lands is distinctive because we are the landowner and operator, managing everything from root to credit,” said Jamie Houston, CEO of Aurora Sustainable Lands. “This comprehensive approach ensures the highest integrity and quality of our carbon credits.”
Microsoft’s Long-Term Climate Vision
This agreement is part of Microsoft’s broader goal to become carbon negative by 2030, with a focus on nature-based and durable solutions.
“We believe transparent and high-integrity nature-based carbon removal is important to meeting Microsoft’s Carbon Negative 2030 goal,” said Brian Marrs, Senior Director, Energy & Carbon Removal at Microsoft. “This agreement with Anew and Aurora reflects our commitment to advancing the integrity and impact of improved forest management.”
