History will remember Ted Turner as a visionary, a media pioneer, and one of the great philanthropists of our time. But the Ted I had the privilege to know was something even more profound: a deeply humane man, driven not by prestige or legacy, but by an unwavering conviction that the world could – and must – do better for those left behind.

Ted never believed in doing things conventionally. So perhaps the most fitting tribute is one that honors not only the scale of his generosity, but the people and principles that transformed his audacious idea into a force for global good.

A Billion‑Dollar Moment That Changed History

In 1997, Ted Turner made a commitment that stunned the world: a $1 billion pledge to support United Nations causes. At the time, it was one of the largest philanthropic gifts ever made by an individual. But for Ted, the reasoning was simple. The United Nations was doing essential work to improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people – it just lacked the resources to do so effectively.

His gift was more than a financial contribution. It was a declaration of intent, a challenge to the world to match ambition with action.

Secretary‑General Kofi Annan was deeply moved by Ted’s extraordinary gesture, especially at a time when the UN was facing significant financial constraints. Yet the organization was not structured to directly manage a philanthropic commitment of this scale and flexibility. That realization sparked a series of conversations that would ultimately reshape the relationship between global philanthropy and multilateral action.

Team Turner: The People Behind the Vision

Ted surrounded himself with exceptional people who understood both the boldness of his vision and the discipline required to make it real.

Senator Tim Wirth brought political gravitas, diplomatic skill, and a deep commitment to multilateralism. Bob Biebel, Taylor Glover, and others helped translate Ted’s ideas into operational reality. Rutherford Seydel – Ted’s son‑in‑law and trusted legal advisor – provided steadiness, discretion, and unwavering loyalty from the earliest days.

Ted also exchanged ideas with respected international figures, including the late Maurice Strong, founding Executive Director of UNEP and Secretary‑General of the Rio Earth Summit – a leader who, like Ted, believed that solving global challenges required both visionary leadership and practical action.

Atlanta, the Negotiations, and Building Something New

From the UN side, Secretary‑General Annan entrusted Joe Connor, Under‑Secretary‑General for Management, to lead discussions with Team Turner. Joe and I traveled to Atlanta several times to work through the details with Ted and his team.

Ted wanted an arrangement that would fast‑track support to projects and programs in the field. Together, we developed a framework focused on a few priority areas: children’s health, women and population, the environment, peace and security, and selected humanitarian concerns. These priorities reflected Ted’s convictions, the wisdom of his wife Jane Fonda, the perspectives of his children – including Laura Turner Seydel – and the counsel of those closest to him.

I had the privilege of helping shape the formal relationship agreement between the United Nations and the newly established UN Foundation – a framework that gave institutional expression to one man’s extraordinary act of faith in humanity.

Building the Institution: From Wirth to Calvin to Cousens

What Ted began required visionary leadership to transform a historic gift into a lasting institution.

Senator Tim Wirth, the UN Foundation’s founding president, translated Ted’s bold commitment into policy, partnerships, and programs that would touch millions of lives. His leadership shaped the foundation’s international development strategy and its early identity.

Kathy Calvin, who succeeded him, ushered the foundation into a new era of global engagement, deepening its networks and cementing its role as an indispensable bridge between the United Nations and the wider world.

Today, under the steadfast leadership of Elizabeth Cousens as President and CEO, the UN Foundation continues to carry forward Ted’s mission with passion and determination. Upon Ted’s passing, she described him as “an unparalleled humanitarian, a mentor, a friend, and a personal hero,” and pledged that the Foundation would always answer his call.

Ted also assembled a formidable Board of Directors – leaders who understood that philanthropy requires not only generosity, but stewardship, patience, and long‑term commitment. Together, they ensured that Ted’s original vision evolved into a robust and responsive institution.

A Family Legacy

The Turner family has been central to this story from the beginning. Laura Turner Seydel, a passionate environmentalist and humanitarian, has carried forward many of her father’s deepest commitments with grace and determination. Alongside her, Rutherford Seydel has remained a steadfast presence, helping preserve the values and spirit that shaped Ted’s extraordinary gift.

Ted did not simply give money. He gave his time, his voice, and his family’s enduring commitment to making the world better.

A Ripple That Became a Wave

Perhaps one of Ted’s most lasting contributions was the example he set.

Long before large‑scale philanthropy became commonplace, Ted demonstrated that private wealth could be mobilized boldly in service of humanity. He viewed philanthropy not as charity, but as catalytic capital – a way to unlock new possibilities for global cooperation.

His example helped inspire a new generation of philanthropists, reflected in initiatives such as the Giving Pledge championed by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, which Ted himself joined.

Over the years, Ted and the UN Foundation built an ever‑expanding network of supporters and partners. His original $1 billion gift helped catalyze more than $3 billion for UN programs and causes. Those partnerships continue to flourish – a living legacy that reaches into communities and lives around the world that Ted Turner cared about deeply.

The Last Word

UN Secretary‑General António Guterres described Ted Turner as “a visionary whose conviction, generosity, and audacious spirit left a lasting imprint on the United Nations and our world.” He was right.

Under the stewardship of Deputy Secretary‑General Amina Mohammed, as Chair of the UNFIP Advisory Board, the partnership with the UN Foundation has continued to deepen and flourish. Her foresight, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to multilateral cooperation have helped ensure that Ted’s original vision remains not only alive, but more relevant than ever.

Ted believed that one person – with enough courage, conviction, and compassion – could change the trajectory of human suffering.

He proved that to be true. Millions of people around the world are healthier, safer, and more hopeful because Ted Turner dared to act at an unprecedented scale.

To Ted, with profound admiration and gratitude beyond measure. Thank you.
