Championing Environmental Protection and Sustainability

Aliona Isac, a hydrologist from Moldova, is this week’s SDG News Rising Star, recognized for her extraordinary contributions to environmental protection, particularly in combating land degradation and drought. With a Master’s degree and ongoing Ph.D. studies in Environmental Protection, Aliona has dedicated her career to preserving natural ecosystems and ensuring the sustainability of life.

Aliona Isac currently works at the State Hydrometeorological Service and serves as the National Consultant for the Land Degradation Neutrality Target Setting Programme 2.0, a crucial initiative under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). She leads the national working group for UNCCD in Moldova, driving impactful strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of drought and land degradation. Her work, which bridges science, diplomacy, and policy, has earned her recognition as a UNCCD Land Hero.

An Advocate for Youth and Sustainability

Aliona Isac is also a passionate advocate for youth involvement in sustainability. As a member of the National Youth Council and an Ambassador for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Black Sea, she actively promotes environmental awareness and sustainable development among young people. Through her leadership, Aliona is not only shaping national environmental strategies but also inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards.
