At a time when the world is struggling to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), H.E. Mr. Lok Bahadur Thapa of Nepal now occupies one of the most consequential \u2014 and often underappreciated \u2014 leadership roles within the United Nations system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Thapa sits at the center of the UN\u2019s global sustainable development machinery during a pivotal year for international cooperation, financing reform, climate resilience, and the future credibility of multilateralism itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And with the 2026 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) fast approaching in July at UN Headquarters in New York, his presidency is increasingly coming into global focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Presidency Rooted in \u201cDelivering Better\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When Thapa assumed the ECOSOC presidency in July 2025, he introduced a simple but ambitious guiding theme for the year ahead: \u201cDelivering Better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That emphasis carries particular significance coming from Nepal \u2014 a country that sits at the intersection of some of the world\u2019s defining development challenges, including climate vulnerability, mountain ecosystem protection, food security, and sustainable economic transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Nepali to Lead ECOSOC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Thapa\u2019s presidency is historic for Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elected by acclamation in July 2025, he became the first representative from Nepal \u2014 and one of the few diplomats from a least developed and landlocked developing country \u2014 to lead ECOSOC in the institution\u2019s 80-year history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His diplomatic career spans decades across bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, including postings in China, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps most importantly, Thapa brings to the role the perspective of countries often most affected by global shocks while possessing the least influence over the systems shaping them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defining moment of Thapa\u2019s presidency will likely come this July during the 2026 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development \u2014 the UN\u2019s central platform for reviewing global progress on the SDGs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Convening from July 6\u201315 at UN Headquarters, this year\u2019s HLPF arrives during a period of mounting concern that the world is significantly off track in achieving the 2030 Agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2026 forum will focus heavily on clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, innovation and infrastructure, sustainable cities, and partnerships for the goals \u2014 themes increasingly viewed as interconnected pillars of future resilience and prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While less publicly visible than the Security Council or General Assembly, ECOSOC remains one of the most influential coordinating bodies within the UN system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
