{"id":2089,"date":"2024-04-23T13:47:59","date_gmt":"2024-04-23T13:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sdgnews.com\/?p=2089"},"modified":"2024-04-23T13:48:35","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T13:48:35","slug":"un-chief-sounds-alarm-4-trillion-investment-needed-to-bridge-financing-gap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sdgnews.com\/zh\/un-chief-sounds-alarm-4-trillion-investment-needed-to-bridge-financing-gap\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Chief Sounds Alarm: $4 Trillion Investment Needed to Bridge Financing Gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UN Secretary-General on Monday called for a \u201csurge in investment\u201d to give developing countries a chance to build better lives for their people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to UN estimates, the world is facing an annual financing gap of about $4 trillion to achieve sustainable development, leaving countries with hardly any resources to invest in better education, healthcare, renewable energy or social protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>&nbsp;(SDGs) are hanging by a thread, and with them, the hopes and dreams of billions of people around the world,\u201d<\/em> Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, UN Chief&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2024-04-22\/secretary-generals-remarks-2024-ecosoc-forum-financing-for-development-follow-bilingual-delivered-scroll-down-for-all-english-and-all-french\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, addressing the UN Economic and Social Council\u2019s (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/ecosoc\/en\/\">ECOSOC<\/a>) 2024&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/financing.desa.un.org\/events\/ecosoc-financing-development-forum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forum on Financing for Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, the UN chief urged countries to push for the SDG Stimulus of $500 billion annually in affordable long-term finance for developing countries, which he proposed in February 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recalling that the Stimulus was welcomed by world leaders at the SDG Summit last year, he stressed \u201cnow it\u2019s time to move from words to action and deliver affordable, long-term financing at scale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-reform-global-financial-architecture\">Reform global financial architecture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In his remarks, the Secretary-General also called for greater representation of developing countries in global financial systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe countries who need these systems and institutions most were not present at their creation \u2013 a lack of representation that continues to this day,\u201d<\/em> he said, underlining the urgent need for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that context, he highlighted the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/summit-of-the-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Summit of the Future<\/a>, which will be convened on 22 and 23 September in New York, and the 2025 Financing for Development Conference in Spain as \u201ckey opportunities\u201d to gather world leaders to reform the global financial architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cLet\u2019s make the most of these opportunities. Now is the time for ambition. Now is the time for reform,\u201d <\/em>Mr. Guterres urged UN Member States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow is the time to shape a global economic and financial system that delivers for people and planet,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We must work together<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Paula Narv\u00e1ez, the ECOSOC President, also highlighted the need for the international financial architecture to channel sufficient resources towards the most vulnerable economies in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stressing the need to confront dated paradigms and to renew cooperation among nations to implement the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/development-agenda\/\">2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a>, she reminded delegates that the task at hand \u201cis not an easy one\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe must work together, and we must unite all of our political capital and determination to address these challenges,\u201d<\/em> she said, noting the urgent needs of least developed countries and other low-income countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also called for ways to effectively coordinate public and private creditors and ensure that commercial creditors fulfil their obligations as well as \u201csignificantly increasing\u201d concessional financing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Focus on debt crisis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Also addressing the Forum, Dennis Francis, President of the UN General Assembly,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/78\/2024\/04\/22\/pga-remarks-at-the-opening-segment-of-the-ecosoc-forum-on-financing-for-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">called<\/a>&nbsp;for a \u201crelentless focus\u201d on the debt crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, the global public debt reached a staggering $313 trillion and over the last decade, increasing far more rapidly in developing nations than in developed ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Worse, developing countries are paying twice as much in interest on their total sovereign debt stocks than developed nations, hobbling them further as they try to ascend the development ladder,\u201d<\/em> Mr. Francis said, noting that over 100 countries have been forced to choose between servicing their debt or invest in development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAll the while, nearly half of humanity \u2013 or 3.3 billion people \u2013 live in countries that spend more on interest payments than on education or health&#8230;No nation \u2013 &nbsp;I repeat, no nation \u2013 should be forced to gamble with their future,\u201d<\/em> he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He recalled the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/search\/%22Sustainability%20Week%22?f%5B0%5D=date%3A2024-04\">General Assembly\u2019s first-ever Sustainability Week<\/a>, which concluded on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAs participants made clear, countries must be enabled to channel their resources towards uplifting their communities and building resilience rather than servicing excessive debt,\u201d<\/em> Mr. Francis noted.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UN Secretary-General on Monday called for a \u201csurge in investment\u201d to give developing countries a chance to build better lives for their people.
