Maisa Rojas, Chile\u2019s Minister of Environment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cToday, the main challenge is to make biodiversity visible and recognize its critical role in economic development, social organization, and the identity of our countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Momentum continues later this month with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sdgnews.com\/zh\/nature-summit-2025-may-panama-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>Nature Summit<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/strong>, taking place from May 19\u201322 in Panama City. Held during UN Global Climate Week, the Summit will bring together leaders from over 180 countries to announce new climate finance commitments and launch nature-based solutions on the road to COP30. Confirmed speakers include Simon Stiell, UNFCCC, Juan Carlos Navarro, and Robert M\u00e6rsk Uggla, reinforcing Panama\u2019s rise as a diplomatic hub for global sustainability action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finance Innovation Anchors Biodiversity Push<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants explored solutions including nature bonds, fintech, nature credits, subsidy reform, and the <strong>\u201cfinance-for-finance\u201d model<\/strong>, which has already catalyzed <strong>$1.6 billion for nature across 41 countries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cSafeguarding nature is not just one priority among many \u2014 it is the foundation that sustains our economies, our societies, and the promise of a dignified future,\u201d said <strong>Michelle Muschett, UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>BIOFIN\u2019s impact examples in 2024 include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Botswana<\/strong>: $7M in new park revenues from protected area fee reform<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Argentina<\/strong>: $420M plan in Misiones Province including jaguar insurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ecuador<\/strong>: $800M in nature-positive microloans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thailand<\/strong>: Coral protection fees generated $314K<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kazakhstan<\/strong>: Protected area budgets tripled to $70.3M<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe GEF is pleased to be working with BIOFIN to accelerate the actions that will close the biodiversity finance gap,\u201d said <strong>Carlos Manuel Rodr\u00edguez, CEO and Chairperson of the GEF<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Private Sector and Subsidy Reform in Focus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A growing call emerged to <strong>repurpose environmentally harmful subsidies<\/strong>, creating dual wins for budgets and ecosystems. The private sector\u2019s role is also expanding via <strong>green bonds, access and benefit-sharing<\/strong>, and financing mechanisms linked to genetic resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTogether we are helping governments realign financial flows and mobilize domestic resources for biodiversity,\u201d said Rodr\u00edguez.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The event reinforced <strong>UNDP\u2019s Nature Pledge<\/strong>, supporting 140 countries to achieve biodiversity goals and unlock <strong>$10 trillion in potential economic opportunity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBy bringing together over 130 countries, we are not only reaffirming our collective commitment&#8230; but also translating that commitment into actionable strategies,\u201d said <strong>Midori Paxton, Global Director of UNDP\u2019s Nature Hub<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paving the Way to COP30 and Beyond<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With biodiversity loss and climate change reinforcing each other, the urgency to integrate nature finance into development agendas is paramount.
