KAMPALA \u2014<\/strong> Uganda has become the first African country to receive a results-based payment from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), securing US$31 million for verified emission reductions achieved through sustainable forestry and land management. The landmark approval recognizes measurable success under the \u201cUganda REDD-plus Results-Based Payment for Emission Reductions (2016\u20132017)\u201d<\/em> programme, which cut net emissions by over 8 million tonnes of CO\u2082 \u2014 equivalent to nurturing 133 million tree seedlings for a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A historic first for Africa<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The approval was announced at the 43rd Green Climate Fund Board meeting in Songdo, Republic of Korea, where Uganda\u2019s project, supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), was endorsed as the continent\u2019s first GCF-backed results-based initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alfred Okot Okidi<\/strong>, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Water and Environment, hailed the decision as a milestone for African climate finance. \u201cThe revenue from these results clearly demonstrates how persistence and long-term planning yield results,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The payment rewards Uganda for verified emission reductions achieved during 2016\u20132017 under the REDD+ framework, a UNFCCC mechanism incentivizing developing countries to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaboration built over a decade<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The project reflects over 16 years of coordinated work among the Ministry of Water and Environment, FAO, the World Bank, the Austrian Development Agency, and the UN-REDD Programme. Together, they helped Uganda build forest monitoring systems, technical capacity, and verification mechanisms essential for Green Climate Fund accreditation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bob Kazungu<\/strong>, Uganda\u2019s National REDD+ Focal Point, said the results highlight a turning point in forest governance: \u201cThis payment reflects Uganda\u2019s determination to manage forests sustainably and invest in the future of its people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
