Leadership in a Moment of Global Disruption

As war in Iran disrupts critical maritime routes and sends shockwaves through global supply chains, the importance of steady leadership in the shipping industry has rarely been clearer.

The conflict has strained shipping routes across the Middle East, including the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital maritime chokepoints through which a significant share of global oil and energy shipments normally pass. Shipping companies have been forced to reassess routes, insurance costs, and security risks, underscoring how fragile the infrastructure of global trade can be.

At the center of this system stands Robert Mærsk Uggla, Chairman of A.P. Møller – Mærsk and Chief Executive Officer of A.P. Møller Holding, whose leadership is helping shape how the world’s largest shipping networks navigate an era defined by geopolitical instability and environmental transformation.

As the fifth generation of the founding Mærsk family, Uggla carries responsibility for stewarding one of the most consequential companies in global commerce at a moment when the architecture of globalization itself is under pressure.

A Fifth-Generation Steward of a Global Institution

Headquartered in Copenhagen, Maersk sits at the heart of the world economy. The company operates one of the largest shipping and logistics networks on the planet, connecting supply chains across more than 130 countries and helping move the vast majority of goods that travel by sea.

Uggla assumed the chairmanship of Maersk in 2022, marking a generational transition within the family enterprise that traces its origins to 1904. At the same time, he leads A.P. Møller Holding, the family investment company that controls the majority voting shares in the Maersk ecosystem.

What distinguishes the Maersk model from many global corporations is its long-term orientation. Ownership is anchored in foundations established by the company’s founders, ensuring that profits support philanthropic initiatives while safeguarding the independence and stability of the company.

The result is a rare corporate structure designed for stewardship rather than short-term gain.

Driving the Decarbonization of Global Shipping

Robert Mærsk Uggla’s leadership has increasingly focused on one of the defining challenges facing global trade: decarbonizing the shipping industry.

Maritime transport accounts for roughly three percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, placing the sector under intense pressure to transform its fuel systems and infrastructure.

Maersk has emerged as one of the most visible corporate advocates for accelerating that transition. The company has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2040 and has invested heavily in vessels powered by green fuels.

Central to this effort is the proposed IMO Net Zero Framework, a landmark effort to regulate emissions across the global shipping industry and introduce mechanisms that would accelerate the adoption of cleaner fuels.

Negotiations around a global maritime carbon pricing system have been politically contentious, particularly after the United States moved to undermine the push for a global shipping carbon tax. Despite these challenges, Maersk has continued to advocate for ambitious international rules that would drive industry-wide decarbonization.

For Robert Mærsk Uggla, the logic is straightforward. The future of global trade will depend on an industry capable of moving goods efficiently while dramatically reducing its environmental footprint.

Engaging the Global Nature Economy

Uggla has also begun engaging more directly with global sustainability initiatives beyond shipping.

In May 2025, he delivered keynote remarks at the Nature Summit in Panama City, a high-level gathering co-hosted by the Government of Panama and Global Resilience Partners during the UNFCCC Global Climate Week.

The summit brought together leaders of the emerging nature-based economy including investors, government officials, scientists, and corporate executives working to accelerate investment in climate and biodiversity solutions.

Robert Mærsk Uggla’s participation reflected a growing recognition among global business leaders that resilient supply chains depend not only on technology and infrastructure but also on the health of the planet’s natural systems.

Steering Global Trade Through a New Era

The global shipping industry now finds itself navigating multiple historic transitions at once.

Geopolitical tensions are disrupting trade routes. Supply chains are being restructured after years of pandemic shocks. Governments are demanding rapid decarbonization of the sector.

For Robert Mærsk Uggla, the challenge is not simply managing a shipping company. It is guiding one of the central institutions of globalization through a period when both the stability of global trade and the sustainability of the planet are at stake.

In an era defined by disruption, his leadership reflects a growing understanding that the future of commerce and the future of the climate are inseparable.
