Lene Oddershede, Chief Scientific Officer, Planetary Science and Technology, Novo Nordisk Foundation

Lene Oddershede has built a career around a question that increasingly defines global competitiveness: how to turn scientific excellence into lasting technological and societal advantage.

A physicist by training, Lene Oddershede spent years in academia before joining the Novo Nordisk Foundation in 2019 to establish and lead its activities in natural and technical sciences. In 2025, she became Chief Scientific Officer for Planetary Science and Technology, with a portfolio spanning natural and technical sciences, artificial intelligence, quantum, agriculture, food, innovation and other areas tied to long-term societal impact and competitiveness. 

Before joining the Foundation, Oddershede was a professor of physics at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen. Her scientific career earned several major Danish honors, including the Elite Research Prize and the Silver Medal of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. She is also a member of both the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences and the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. 

Today, her influence extends well beyond research.

Lene Oddershede chairs Quantum Foundry Copenhagen and QuNorth, serves on the board of Quantum Denmark, and sits on the High-Level Advisory Board on Quantum for European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen. Those roles place her at the intersection of science, institutional capital, infrastructure and technology strategy. 

The Distinction

Lene Oddershede represents a particularly important kind of leadership in frontier technology: someone who understands both how science is created and how institutions can finance the conditions for it to scale.

That distinction matters because breakthroughs alone do not create technological leadership. They require laboratories, talent, infrastructure, long-term funding and institutions willing to support technologies before commercial markets are fully formed.

Lene Oddershede operates across both sides of that equation.

Her scientific background gives her direct insight into how research ecosystems work. Her current role gives her influence over how large-scale philanthropic capital can help shape them.

Her career reflects a broader change in how strategic technologies are being financed.

Governments and venture capital remain central, but large foundations and other forms of patient institutional capital are becoming increasingly important in fields where scientific timelines can stretch well beyond conventional investment cycles.

That model is especially consequential for technologies that require major research infrastructure and sustained investment before commercial returns are clear.

Lene Oddershede’s significance therefore goes beyond the movement of a physicist into philanthropy.
