Owen Lozman, Co-Founder & Managing Partner, 55 North

Owen Lozman has built his career around the point where advanced science becomes investable.

Before co-founding 55 North, Lozman was a senior investor at M Ventures, the corporate venture arm of Merck KGaA, where he helped build and lead the firm’s technology investment activities across areas including semiconductors, advanced materials and quantum-related technologies.

That background gave him a close view of one of deep tech’s central challenges: promising science often requires years of capital, specialist infrastructure and technical development before commercial markets fully emerge.

In 2025, Lozman became Co-Founder and Managing Partner of 55 North, a Copenhagen-headquartered venture firm focused exclusively on quantum technologies and the enabling stack around them. Its inaugural fund targets €300 million, with a first close of €134 million anchored by Novo Holdings and Denmark’s Export and Investment Fund, EIFO. Novo Holdings described it at launch as the world’s largest pure-play quantum venture fund.

The Distinction

Lozman’s significance lies in the scale of the capital problem he is trying to solve.

Quantum is not a single technology category. It is an emerging industrial stack that spans hardware, software, components, enabling technologies and infrastructure.

Building that stack requires more than small specialist bets.

It requires institutional-scale capital capable of supporting long development cycles and technical risk across multiple layers of the ecosystem.

That is where Lozman’s role becomes distinct.

His investment background gives him the discipline to evaluate commercial opportunity, while 55 North’s structure allows him to deploy capital across the broader quantum value chain. Early investments including IQM and Kiutraillustrate that approach, spanning quantum computing and enabling infrastructure.

The Bigger Signal

Lozman represents a broader shift in how capital is approaching frontier technology.

For years, much of quantum was financed through governments, universities, corporate laboratories and relatively small specialist funds. As the sector moves toward industrialization, the capital requirements are rising — and so is the need for investors who understand both the underlying technology and the scale required to commercialize it.

55 North was created directly around that opportunity.

Its €300 million target reflects a larger thesis: that quantum is beginning to require the kind of capital base associated not simply with scientific experimentation, but with the creation of an industry.

That is why The Deep Tech Capitalist fits.

Lozman is not simply investing in individual quantum companies. He is helping assemble the financial infrastructure around an emerging technology ecosystem — identifying the companies, components and capabilities that could become essential as the sector scales.

What to Watch: Whether 55 North can turn institutional-scale capital and specialist technology insight into a repeatable model for quantum industrialization — and where across the emerging value chain that capital ultimately creates the most durable value.
